New iPhone Worm Is “Never gonna give you up, never gonna let you down…”

Jailbroken iPhone owners, you better listen up or you might be seeing Rick Astley as a wallpaper on your iPhone!

There’s a new worm spotted in Australia. It “exploits” the fact that most users with a jailbroken iPhone, doesn’t change the default SSH password if you have OpenSSH installed. If the iPhone is infected, it will start looking for other iPhones on the network also with the default SSH password and infect those iPhones as well.

There’s no need to worry about data loss or anything like that. All the worm does, is annoying you – and infecting others. At first it would direct you to a web page where you would be charged a small fee for the information on how to protect your iPhone, but the “worm maker” removed the fee so it’s now free.

Too bad it doesn’t change the ring tone as well…. “Never gonna give you up, never gonna let you down…”.  Rick Astley, ladies and gentlemen!

    • Hi Ligurien,

It’s not a virus. It’s a worm – and it doesn’t do anything than to replace your wallpaper. Also it’s only if your iPhone is jailbroken. There’s no antivirus for iPhone – and it’s not necessary either 🙂 (yet)

  2. That’s extremely funny. If this happened to my friend, he’d be so pissed and I’d be laughing so hard. Too bad he isn’t an Aussie. I would keep that wallpaper if it happened to me.

Klaus — I have a question for you. If you have a default SSH password for iPod Touch and a wireless connection with a hard to guess password, will this worm get into my iPod? I’m hypothesizing “no”. You need to be on the same wireless to use SSH.

    Thanks. 😉

    • Hi Adrian,

I don’t think you have anything to fear. As I understand, the devices must be on the same network and the only way other devices can get onto your network is if the owner knows your password for encryption. No need to worry 🙂

    • RickRolled FTW, right? 🙂

Chuck Norris would have been way cooler though. It could then randomize different pictures and texts… “When playing poker, Chuck Norris always wins. Even if you have a royal flush.”
