Review: Joby Gorillapod

Joby Gorillapod with video camcorderThis review is brought to you by mydigitalphotos.dk.

If you like taking pictures and still doesn’t own a tripod of some sort, you better listen up, and listen carefully, cause you are missing out on a whole dimension within digital photography. A tripod allows you, for instance, to take shake-free pictures, even in low light, day and night.

Meet Joby, makers of Gorillapod. A name so attracting that you must be craving for more details.

Gorillapod differs from the ordinary tripod by being extremely flexible. It consists of more than 30 joints, each one will bend in any direction.

The series of Gorillapod is currently made up of five different models with the main difference being the amount of weight they will hold up:

  • Gorillapod Go-Go!: MP3 players, mobile phones, small pocketcams etc.
  • Gorillapod Original: Pocketcameras.
  • Gorillapod SLR: For smaller SLR cameras, video cameras, flash etc. Max 800 grams.
  • Gorillapod SLR-ZOOM: For bigger SLR cameras, video cameras, flash etc. Max 3 kg.
  • Gorillapod Focus: The Cadilac of Gorillapods, for professional SLR cameras, long lenses etc.

Joby Gorillapod Original

The Gorillapod is made out of plastic and comes with rubber feet as well as a rubber collar around the joints. This makes it easier for Gorillapod to attach to surfaces where normal plastic wouldn’t be able to “stick”.

You attach a camera to the Gorillapod by first installing a small plate at the bottom of your camera which allows you to “slide” your camera into the locking mechanism of the Gorillapod and engage the lock, if you want to make sure the camera doesn’t slide back out by itself.

Thanks to the very flexible joints, the Gorillapod can be used in places you wouldn’t even dream of putting an ordinary tripod, say, on the handlebars on your bike, or the railing, perhaps?

Conclusion

Chances are, if you’re a happy shooter with a small pocket camera, that you never really thought of investing in a tripod. I don’t blame you, running around with a tripod for a pocketcam just seems a bit overkill. But Joby has entered a market with their Gorillapod that will make it much easier for us ordinary people with pocketcams, to still get the benefits of a tripod. Gorillapod is highly recommended if you want to explore a new dimension of photography, no more shaky hands to ruin the perfect shot! Be careful though, Gorillapod is so popular in many places, that you will find a lot of low value copies that does not offer the same kind of quality. Make sure you get the original product. Your camera will thank you for it!
