Getting Online Before Breakfast, Yes Please!

Breakfast tableMorning rituals are not what they used to be. The well known “toilet, coffee, cornflakes and toast”-routine is seeing competition from another routine where it’s more important to get online first, then breakfast…

I used to wake up, toilet and shower, breakfast while watching the news or similar on TV – then going to work.

Now, I not only check e-mail but also Facebook and Twitter from my iPhone as soon as I wake up. Then it’s time for a shower and breakfast afterwards. No more checking news in the mornings – if it’s important, it’s already on Facebook or Twitter. Otherwise I’ll get my daily update on local news during my lunch break.

Almost the same thing is happening with the Gude family of four persons. They also used to begin their days with breakfast and chitchat at the table and newspaper reading. But no longer, according to an article in the New York Times.

The father wakes up at 6am, he goes online to check his work e-mail, Facebook and Twitter, after which he texts his two teenagers to wake up, rather than physically going to their rooms and wake them up. The two teenagers start their day with SMS, video games and Facebook.

Obviously the mother isn’t too happy with the situation, but eventualy she succumbed to turning on her laptop once breakfast is over.

“Things that I thought were unacceptable a few years ago are now commonplace in my house,” she said, “like all four of us starting the day on four computers in four separate rooms.” – she said to the New York Times.

  2. Oh I can definitely identify with that! I have actually started getting up an HOUR EARLY each day now so I can make the rounds of email, Twitter, blog comments, etc. The time zone difference between me and most of the others I read means that there are always messages waiting for me and I am eager to see them! My sons each got an iPod touch (because I didn’t want iphone bills at this point) so they can check Facebook before they do anything. Early morning life is so much fun unless the DSL goes down. 😉

  3. It is pretty much everywhere like that now. Everyone does it just like that. I dont do it as much as other people but I do check my email, news, etc.

On another note why don’t you try BlackBerry devices instead of iPhone?

        • Nothing, I guess 🙂

          But iPhone is more “me”:

          1) MobileMe sync is perfect
          2) Mac compatiblity is perfect
          3) App Store….
          4) The ease of use of everything in the iPhone

I used to always have the newest highend Nokia/Sony Ericsson mobile or maybe even a Windows Mobile, but to be honest, while their specs are far better than iPhone, they suck at taking advantage of them in a way that makes it enjoyable to use.

            • That’s the beauty of the market as it is today, there’s always a phone that fits one better than another, so you’re a BlackBerry and I’m an iPhone 🙂

  4. I just mentioned something like this in one of my posts last week, I honestly can’t wait to finish my shower routine in the morning just to get to a computer. It’s my true love 🙂 Of course after fresh breath.

  5. I’m completely like that now. In the past, I always watched the Philly sports network’s morning recap show, but now I’m online, checking sites, forums, email, etc. while I eat breakfast at the computer.

  6. Yes, in the morning checking emails, twitter, and facebook is a must! Have to stay up to date on what’s going on with my online business and some of my close friends.

  7. Wow, I’m not that bad or at least I think so. Most of my mornings is getting ready for work and then check my emails. Get home and start posting. I have actually started to schedule posts for future days and helps free a lot of my time.

I know a few people that can’t wait to get up and for some it’s their job and they have to. We as bloggers must make sure it does not consume us.

So you schedule them in WordPress to be published later, if you have a bunch of posts lined up already? Or you just make room in your calendar for you to do some blogging?

  8. That’s me… after about 4 or 5 hours sleep (if I am lucky) I get out of bed, go straight upstairs to my office and hit the computer, usually in just my boxers and a t-shirt (I know… too much information). Then after an hour or two depending when I get up, I go and wake the kids up (as wife as usually at yoga class), feed them, take a shower… and then back to the computer. Pretty much same thing everyday, except for weekends.

  9. Nope my routine is still the same as I get up at 3.45am and don’t have time to get online. Once the weekend comes though, well that is an entirely different situation.

      • No, a lot more important than that. I deliver milk to cafes and supermarkets. Without me people would not be able to have their morning coffee 😉

          • Yep, now if only I could do it all from the computer, I wouldn’t have to leave home to deliver the milk. But then I would probably become overweight from lack of exercise, and we couldn’t have that now, could we?

            • That would definitely suck – but I’m soon publishing a post about how I lost 15kg with an iPhone app, so in case you get overweight, you might find help in that post 😀

            • I don’t have an iPhone, but I do have an iPod Touch and I reckon it would work on that just as well, so yes, I will have to keep an eye out for that post 🙂

I completely understand why you’re eager to get up and check stats – no matter what stats, be it blog stats, income stats, or whatever… stats are always great to keep tabs on 😀

  11. I get up and immediately come to the computer to check email. If I don’t leave within 30 minutes to go for a walk, then I’m probably sitting at my computer for a couple of hours before I even think about eating or doing anything else, unless I have a meeting. That’s a shame, but it’s how life goes.

    • Hi Mitch – welcome to techpatio.com!

Oh I know that problem way too well, once you get hooked at the computer in the morning, it’s very hard to get away from it again. Important to do the must-do’s in the morning first, unless one is really ble to only be sitting at the computer for a pre-determined amount of time 🙂
