These years, we see more and more security cameras everywhere we go. There’s no limit anymore, everything can be under surveillance one way or the other. We might have terrorism to thank for that, at least some of it.
A study in 2005 showed that there are at least 500,000 cameras in London and in a single day, a person should expect to be filmed 300 times. That’s 5 years ago. Imagine how many cameras they have today, in London alone…
Also in the UK, photographers run the risk of being subject to a “stop and search” under Section 44 of the Terrorism Act 2000. You don’t even have to sneak around while you take pictures – just take a picture of the wrong building or landmark, or a cop thinks you’re snapping pictures while holding your camera at waist level and stuff like that, you might as well prepare to give up your information and probably let a police officer check your camera equipment as well. If you refuse, you’re likely to be arrested.
So what is it with security/hidden cameras that gives us this extra comfort? Would you install a hidden camera somewhere, just to keep an eye on someone or something? I think more people do so, than we think. Especially because cameras are so small these days – and cheap – and you can get them in all shapes and sizes, making it easy to hide them pretty much any place you want.
I don’t think people mind the cameras at all – when it’s not themselves being recorded. Also, what do we have to fear when it comes to being recorded, if we haven’t done anything illegal?
One has to wonder, what the future holds.
