Internet Explorer 8 Now The Most Used Browser

by Klaus @ TechPatio on February 2, 2010

in Browsers

Google recently announced how they plan to stop supporting Internet Explorer 6 as well as other older browsers from Firefox and Safari when it comes to Google products like Gmail, Calendar etc., during 2010.

Now, updated numbers from Net Applications show that IE 6, which was released 9 years ago, no longer is the most used browser in the world, instead it’s Internet Explorer 8.

  • Internet Explorer 8: 22%
  • Internet Explorer 6: 20%
  • Firefox 3.5: 17%
  • Internet Explorer 7: 14%
  • Firefox 3.0: 5%
  • Chrome 3.0: 3%
  • Opera & Safari: 16%

One important thing to remember when it comes to browser statistics is that the numbers can vary quite a lot. Net Applications is just one out of many companies that does regular worldwide statistics for browsers.

Just for the fun of it, this is the browser statistics for TechPatio readers (past 3 months) according to Google Analytics:

  • Firefox: 50%
  • Safari: 25%
  • Internet Explorer: 14%
  • Chrome: 8%
  • Opera: 1%

I found it shocking that there are lots of people using IE 8 compared to Firefox or other browsers. I thought Firefox was number one last time
