Photo of the week: Happy Valentines Day

I don’t “celebrate” Valentines Day at all. I don’t see the point of giving flowers on a day where it’s expected. I much rather give flowers unexpected and bring real happiness out, rather than pleasing an expectation.

But that doesn’t mean I can’t photograph Valentines-related stuff, such as these balloons which I caught on the Valletta Waterfront yesterday. I’m guessing they’re supposed to add mood to the whole Valentines feel for those who go out to eat on the waterfront restaurants tonight.

  1. I think it’s a rally pretty picture, honestly. And I’ve never understood the negative reaction that Valentine’s Day triggers so often. Often it just seems like cynicism to me. After all, would you protest giving gifts on Christmas because it’s expected and such a common custom?

I mean no disrespect. I’m just curious about the contempt for V-Day.

      • Ok.

1500 is for like stopping race cars, or sports.
f2.8 is for either darkness or blowing out backgrounds.

Lenses become quite soft wide open, or near wide open.

For this shot, if you have clouds in the background, they will only enhance this image, or make it more interesting. So I would try to get them into focus as well.

So I would of gone with probably f8 to ensure all three balloons (and clouds) were in perfect focus and taken whatever shutter speed came up. At ISO100 this bright image would still have a fast enough shutter speed at f8 to stop all movement. (unless these balloons were flapping in a strong wind)

All that said, all photography is very subjective and like I said before, I still think it’s a pretty cool shot.

Well, you can hardly see that any of the other two balloons (in the sides) are out of focus. They were pretty close to the same focal plane as the one in the middle.

Since there are no skies or anything else behind the balloons, needing to be in focus, I don’t see any need for f8 or such. Had there been clouds in the background, I would have went with a smaller aperture for sure. The shutter speed in this case doesn’t matter as all that was needed was a fast enough shutter to freeze the balloons and I’m guessing 1/125 even would have been enough – but when the camera is set to f2.8 and there’s nothing else needing to be in focus than what would be in focus for f2.8, then I didn’t bother changing aperture just to get a slower shutter speed, when in reality, it wouldn’t have given me a different photo πŸ™‚

          This 35mm is a f1.8 lens so at f2.8 it’s pretty good.
