iPhone 5 Rumors: What to Believe, what to Discard

The iPhone 5 is coming out soon enough, and rumors are running wild in all directions about its features, what we can expect, how it will look and even what it might cost. Naturally, Apple is being very secretive about their latest mobile device, but at the same time “accidentally” leaking some information here and there to keep interest alive. Naturally this has lead to a swirl of rumors about what we can expect; some of them are just speculation, others based on real facts. Let’s take a look at what’s cooking amongst Apple fans and see if we can separate some wheat from chaff.

Chinese Online Sellers Offering Pre-Orders of the iPhone 5

It seems that Chinese sellers such as the Taobao e-commerce platform are already offering pre-order sales of the phone. For $160 USD you can get yourself a reservation on a phone, but no absolute guarantee that it will be delivered when released. On the other hand, forking over $1,100 USD in advance gives you a “guaranteed” delivery. The problem is that whichever amount you pay in advance, the end product might not even exist, since Apple hasn’t absolutely confirmed the device’s eventual unveiling. Interestingly, the Chinese sellers are also displaying mock-up images of the phone on their sales page -never mind that no one yet knows what it looks like.

Verdict: False. The sellers probably won’t be delivering much on sales of the machine, and almost certainly have no advance access to any specs or guaranteed wholesaler deliveries.

Apple Will be Ditching the Classic 30 Pin Dock Connector

According to certain electronics gossips, the classic 30 pin dock connector that’s been used since the days of the first iPods will be discontinued in favor of something else; a different proprietary port design that will also not be compatible with many things. The effect of this rumor might be that it causes a lot of irritation, or makes people want to buy the iPhone 5 even more. The old 30 pin connector has always been unpopular as heck due to its incompatibility with other devices (forcing you to buy a special cable from Apple) and its pathetically short length. Some are expecting the new design to improve on these problems, while others just think it will be more of the same old nonsense but with a new look.

Verdict: Seems to be true; a number of tech bloggers have investigated and come to the conclusion that the design change is coming, except, none of them know what the new look will be.

IPhone 5 Release Date

biggest rumor of them all, the one that’s got every Apple fan waiting and watching for news, the release date of the iPhone 5 is reputed to be between mid and late 2012; maybe around September or October, according to some sources. The rumors recently intensified with the release of a series of photos which appear to show a mockup of the phone

Verdict: Much of the support for a September Release date comes to us from tech gossip sites and their elusive but chatty Taiwanese supply-chain manufacturers. It’s nothing solid, but it seems reasonable to believe that the info isn’t off by more than a month or two.

How’s the iPhone 5 Going to Look?

Another major source of swirling rumors, the appearance of the new iPhone has got a lot of people curious and speculating in all sorts of ways. The basic consensus is that it won’t be that much different from the 4S, but that there will be a few notable changes. Again, we go back to “leaked” images coming in from unidentified Chinese suppliers who claim to be showing Apple’s own mockups of the little smart phone. From what’s been talked about and seen, the iPhone 5 will have the same width, a slightly larger 4 inch screen, silver back (maybe) and a revamped battery design. Other rumors also talk about Apple including a NFC technology in the new device and also tossing in a dual core processor for considerably enhanced RAM. It’s also widely believed that the iPhone 5 will have 4G capability.

Verdict: Too much to make a firm decision on, however, we’re probably going to see some serious specs and visual changes for the better. It’s in Apple’s best interest to create a phone that really one-ups not only the 4S but also rivalry from close competitor Samsung and its upcoming machines.

  1. The commercials for the Galaxy S3 are really intriguing and have made me, a die-hard iPhone user consider trying it out to see if I like it. I would love to see the iPhone have some of the capabilities that are featured – mainly, the photo sharing applications. If iPhone wants to create something that will rival that feature, I think they could continue to keep me around and invested.

I’m still on the 4 because I can’t justify the idea of continuing to pay $400 once a year when nothing really changes. If the 5 drastically shakes up the iPhone scene, I might bite – it’ll be cool to see.

    • Better to wait rather than being sorry 🙂 In terms of hardware + looks, I agree the Galaxy S3 is one of the best ones. Though I don’t feel like moving to Android because I like how iOS apps looks and interacts, better than Android’s

Hope iPhone 5 can save the day

      • Yeah the S3 does seem to have a lot going for it. But I don’t mind, it’s good that the Android folks can get some great hardware too 🙂 I’m waiting for iPhone 5 myself, if it’s disappointing, then maybe I’ll switch, but I doubt that it will suck, I think it’s going to be an exciting upgrade to the 4S.

  3. It looks it its going to be longer. All I really care about is if the front facing video camer gets better. Doing self videos is so hard and I would like to see the front facing be more quality.

  5. As a Samsung user, I really need to make a significant change and I’m considering to buy the new iPhone 5. From what I’ve heard it is going to keep the apple’s core values and in the same time to come up with something new.

  8. The new Iphone being 4G would be awesome! I think the Iphones are great products, but sometimes the service providers really make me hate the phone because of dropped calls , lack of internet access etc.

  9. I thought it was announced at the last keynote, but hopefully it will be released in september, or at least before christmas. I have read some news about the new screen, it will be made with a new technology, the touch sensors would be integrated in the crystal display, so it could be cheaper because ti could be ordered from the same manufacturer (LG or Japan Display) I’m looking forward for the forthcoming news…

  13. Interesting & informative post. It looks like iPhone 5 makes people impatience. The most interesting things in iPhone 5 are its screen larger than iPhone 4s, scratch resistant glass back with the solid metal and super thin screen technology. Anyway, thanks for the amazing share.
