App Store reaches 40 billion downloads

Some impressive App Store numbers:

  • 40 billion downloads since launch.
  • Almost 20 billion downloads in 2012 alone.
  • More than 2 billion downloads in December 20102.
  • More than 500 million active iTunes accounts associated with App Store.
  • Developers have combined built more than 775,000 apps and been paid over 7 billion dollars.

Apple emphasizes that the 40 billion downloads are just as impressive as it sounds, as that number has also been cleansed from re-downloads and updates.

App Store was first launched in 2008 with 552 apps.

  1. Amazing numbers, but I’m afraid you’re right, the 40 billion came from the updates and re-downloads, some of my apps have already the 5th updated version although I think it counts only one download. Btw I recognize and appreciate the results, thanks for sharing the interesting information!

    • Hi,

It says in the article above, that the number has been cleansed from re-downloads and updates. So the number is only real, first-time downloads, that’s what makes it even more impressive!

  2. These are absolute gigantic numbers. Apple doesn’t say how much money it makes from its online Stores (iTunes / App), but it’s certainly in the billion. That’s nice to know for any AAPL owner 🙂

On a similar note, Apple celebrated the 10th Anniversary of the iTunes Store not long ago and provided an extensive list of all its milestones. The list is only visible in iTunes (for a limited time). So for posterity reasons, I’ve copied the list in HTML for all to view. Here it is: http://everystevejobsvideo.com/a-decade-of-itunes-store
