The site 9to5 Mac has reported that they have a source from inside the Apple campus and they have spoon feed them the features of the new phone and it sounds very interesting. Firstly as has been stated already by many different rumour sites they new phone will have a smaller dock connector.

The source also stated that their are two prototypes of the Apple device in the wild these are codenamed the iPhone 5.1 and the iPhone 5.2. They tell on that the two models both had the same long and thinner form factor than the current iPhone, not much longer however the phone is meant to be considerably thinner. Along with this the new phone is meant to have a 3.9 inch screen, the source said that this was in both models and has a higher resolution that the current iPhone at 640 x 1136 pixels. This makes the screen have an aspect ratio of 16:9 which you film buffs out there will know is the same aspect ratio as they use for wide screen films, which will mean that if this is true the iPhone will naturally be able to play wide screen films. On the previous iPhone because of the 3.5-inch screen the wide screen aspect ratio always looked very squashed and didn’t tend to play well.

The new iPhone 5 (left), maybe, vs the iPhone 4/4S on the right

This was all they let on from their source inside Apple, however that doesn’t mean there isn’t more to come. At the end of the article they wrote that exact thing. Stating that:

“We have a lot more coming this week, including processor specs, maps and other goodies…”

I don’t know about you but I am eagerly awaiting news on Apple’s newest phone.

Apple is releasing it’s long awaited iPhone 5 this year and it is more than likely going to be a very big update. The iPhone 5 was thought by many people to be released last year but to many people’s disappointment the device didn’t get released and instead Apple only made a few minor updates and releasd the iPhone 4S, this adding strength to the theory that Apple release a major upgrade of it’s phone every two years. If it was every two years then this nicely matches the time it takes for the average phone contract in the US and UK to run out, either way it is time for a new and improved iPhone.

There has been a lot of speculation around the new device, how it looks, what will be changed and even if it will include any new hardware features such as NFC. Personally I don’t think NFC will be included in the next iPhone. What is likely to be included in the next iPhone has been spoken about in an article from iLounge, who have apparently got a source inside Apple who has insider information. Their source has been kind enough to tell them a few things about the next smartphone coming from Apple.

iLounge’s source stated that the iPhone 5 would be a taller device and also a little thinner with a 4 inch screen, which would be 0.5 inch larger than the current one, this is more than likely to compete with the current line up of Android phone such as the HTC ONE X. When commenting on their source iLournge said;

“What we’ve learned: the new iPhone will indeed be longer and thinner than the iPhone 4 and 4S. Approximate measurements are 125mm by 58.5mm by 7.4mm—a 10mm jump in height, nearly 2mm reduction in thickness, and virtually identical width. According to our source, Apple will make one major change to the rear casing, adding a metal panel to the central back of the new iPhone. This panel will be flat, not curved, and metal, not ceramic. Our artist’s rendition provides a rough idea of what this change will look like; it echoes the current-generation iMac design, to be sure.”

Another feature which iLounge’s source told them will be in the iPhone 5 is a smaller dock connector, this will be used in all of Apple’s upcoming products and just be physically smaller than the previous dock. This can be seen in the image below:

While there are plenty of intuitive experiences on the smartphone, some of the more complex features of the iPhone may require a little bit of knowledge to take advantage of when setting up the device. Use the following tricks to get the most out of your Apple smartphone.

1. Setup Keyboard Shortcuts

Typing out the same phrase again and again can quickly become cumbersome on a small, touchscreen keyboard. Apple has a quick workaround for this common problem, allowing short phrases and words to serve as a trigger for a longer sentence. Typing in the shortcut causes the phone to automatically substitute a longer phrase in its place.

For example, if you frequently find yourself asking friends, “How are you?” via text, you may want to create a shortcut, “HRU.” Whenever the HRU shortcut is typed into your phone, “How are you?” will appear in the text field. This allows users to create their own personal dictionary of words and phrases.

It’s important to remember that if a shortcut has been created, the word will always trigger another phrase. For this reason, shortcuts that are not commonly used should be put in place, rather than common words. For example, “how” would likely be a poor shortcut for the question, “How are you?” as this would prevent “how” from being typed in any other context.

2. Lock the Screen Orientation

If you are accustomed to using your phone while in bed or turning the phone for viewing purposes, you may find it annoying to deal with the changing orientation of the phone’s screen. If you would rather use the screen in portrait mode at all times, you can easily lock the orientation of the phone. This will prevent the screen from turning whenever the phone’s physical position is adjusted.

To put this orientation lock into place, simply double-click the home button of the device. You will then use your finger to swipe the applications in the multi-tasking interface at the bottom of the screen to the right. This should show the orientation lock icon, which you can click on or off.

3. Display Character Count in Text Messages

While iPhone and other smartphone users don’t face the same character limits as other phones, users who still use more traditional cellular devices may be unable to receive long text messages. For this reason, some users choose to display the character count of texts they send. This makes it easy to guarantee that a recipient will be able to receive all of the text sent to them.

To turn this feature on, simply navigate to your phone’s settings and click messages. A small switch appears for character count, which can be flipped on at the user’s whim. Whenever the message typed exceeds the length of two lines, the character count will helpfully appear above the send button.

Using the iPhone is a daily learning experience, as each application has a myriad of different shortcuts and tricks that can be mastered. By learning some of these little known tricks for the iPhone in general, users can take advantage of the underlying operating system, making it easier to utilize all of the great features of their device. This in turn can compute to a more enjoyable overall experience on Apple’s smartphone devices.

From sharing applications to those used to transform everyday shots into masterpieces, there are plenty of incredible apps to choose from on the App Store. Some of the following apps are the “must haves” all iPhone users should be certain to download on their phone!

Perhaps the most popular sharing app of all is Instagram, which allows users to take snapshots and apply filters at the click of a finger. Choose from many different filters and borders, which can be applied to existing shots or new photos taken through the application. These photos are in turn shared across the Instagram user’s feed, as well as other networks that have been connected to the application.

Hipstamatic is another popular app, though you will have to shell out a few dollars to enjoy all it has to offer. This app promises to transform photos into shots that are reminiscent of analog photography. The base application comes with plenty of different film and lens options, though additional packs can also be purchased directly through the application. Final products can easily be shared across selected networks.

Camera+ is one of the most popular paid apps in the entire App Store, having received accolades from many reviewers, include TIME magazine and Wired. The Camera+ app builds upon the existing features of the iPhone’s camera, giving the user tools that make it easier to take beautiful photographs. Take advantage of 6x digital zoom capabilities, image stabilization, and plenty of effects to spruce up the final product. For just a dollar, this great app is truly a steal!

HDR FX is another popular option for users looking to add a little spice to existing shots on their phone. Different presets make it easy to optimize the specific elements of each photograph, with the photo analyzer suggesting presets that may work best for particular shots. The HDR FX app also features textures that can add a whole new level of interest to any photo. The app also features a complex set of tools that allow users to edit details like the photo’s opacity and shadows.

Of course, Apple itself also offers a powerful photo editing and cataloguing tool for the iPhone: iPhoto. Mac users will recognize iPhone from the iLife suite of productivity software found on every desktop and notebook computer from Apple. The mobile version of the software includes many of the great features found on the desktop counterpart, which have been transformed to comprehend multi-touch gestures.
Now it appears that the problem also exists on Android, where it’s probably even worse as the app doesn’t even need to ask for any kind of permission. The only thing the app requires is being able to communicate with the internet, which basically all apps does in one way or another – and certainly most users will not hesitate to say “yes” to allow that.

New York Times made a test application which would take the latest photo on your mobile and upload it to a public photo-sharing website. The user was only informed that the app required access to the internet – and that’s it, and it worked.

The biggest problem is that it’s easier to install “bad apps” on Android compared to iPhone, where Apple runs a tight ship with their App Store, having to approve every single app first, before it makes it onto the store. Google doesn’t check apps on Android Market (except if they suspect something is wrong, they may look into it and remove an app), and they don’t check any apps that’s installed from outside their Market.

Basically, be careful what you install on your smartphone – and extra careful if you’re an Android user, and extra extra careful if you install apps from outside Android Market.
Related Articles:

This, ladies and gentlemen, is not your grandmothers standard coffee maker.

The folks of Scanomat have come up with a brilliant coffee idea: a fully automatic coffee maker powered by an iPhone. Once an idea popped into the head of designer Kim Vibe-Petersen, it took just about two days time the prototype was created and already going through test runs. The production ran for about two years, which much detail being spent on the milk foamer.

Named, the TopBrewer, the device consists over 75% recycled stainless steel, it is capable of being used in (yes, in) any tabletop. The set up is easy, just needing a flat tabletop, two small holes (for the swan neck faucets), and some type of drain; and viola, there is the start of a new coffee brewer.

As mentioned earlier in the article, the TopBrewer will be compatible with any iPhone or iPad. The iOS app that will run with the iDevice helps keep counter tops free of unwanted debris and leaves extra room for the cream and sugar. There is also the function of allowing the iPhone/iPad to keep track of how many drinks have been made and to help with inventory by allowing the operator to order beans.

The application is not yet ready for retail sale, but from the screen shots, it will be one of the best applications made for Apple users. Everything needed to run the TopBrewer will be displayed on the screen, giving accurate temperatures and any issues the machine might have.

The TopBrewer is being processed solely for businesses, allowing the owners to have a special save file for regular customers (which will help with keeping lines down and customer satisfaction up), and keeping a detailed report on what is used for future ordering purposes.

But wait, there’s more! The TopBrewer is designed to brew more than just coffee. With the ability to hold up to a liter of hot water every minute, the TopBrewer can whip up macchiatos, latte’s, and cappuccinos within the blink of an eye. The cleanup is super easy as well, there is a built in cleaner that sprays hot water throughout the faucet after each drink. All of this happens within a matter of minutes, which is great for any coffee rush hour.

Though it isn’t scheduled to make its debut until late January or so, the TopBrewer will be an answer to many a coffee shops prayers. Less table space, self-cleaning functions, and the ability to run more than one brewer per iDevice will keep every coffee shop on its toes. Scanomat is truly changing the face of the coffee brewing industry with the TopBrewer. Once this hits stores, guarantee a change in all coffee shops, from the design, to the employees attitudes. Home-brewers don’t fret though; the TopBrewer will be available for household use once all is up and running smoothly.

Having a jog in the morning and want to respond to a text, travelling to a distance place and want to know the weather condition or trying to locate your favorite restaurant and you do not know the directions, Siri is there for your rescue. Even when you’re driving or you need a break from the keyboard, you can speak your status updates instead of typing them. Without glancing at your phone screen, today this voice-based personal assistant allows you to conduct diverse tasks if you own an iPhone 4S. Siri, which is an integrated part of iOS 5, allows you to use your voice to send messages, schedule meetings, place phone calls, etc. Siri is not traditional voice recognition software that asks you to remember passwords and speak commands, but it is the software that understands natural speech and conducts the processing accordingly.

It is overwhelming to understand the buzz that has been happening around Apple’s new personal assistant, whether it can be used for tweets or Facebook updates. However, following some simple steps and using the SMS features of both the social networking sites, you can get Siri to update both your Twitter and Facebook accounts.

Here’s how we go:

How to update Twitter?

Step 1

Begin with setting up your phone on Twitter mobile settings page. Following the steps on the page enter your country and phone number.

Step 2

Then SMS the words ‘GO’ to the number allocated against your country; for U.S. it is 40404. This will help in verification of your phone number with Twitter.

Step 3

In the next step, in order to tweet, you can send and SMS to that registered number. For your convenience, you can add the number t40404 to the iPhone address book and name it as ‘Twitter’.

Step 4

Now to make Siri tweet for you, activate it by pressing the Home button for a long time. Post a text, which can be your status update, to the saved ‘Twitter’ number. Once you confirm and approve the text, the saved ‘Twitter’ number will post the update on your twitter account.

How to update Facebook?

Step 1

As mentioned above for Twitter account, you can follow the similar steps for your Facebook updates. Ensure to verify your phone number in the Facebook mobile settings page.

Step 2

When you visit the page, click on ‘add a phone’. You will be asked to enter your password and select your country and mobile operator. After doing so you have to text the letter ‘F’ to 32665.

Step 3

Once it is done, a confirmation code will be send which you have to enter on the web page. After the steps are completed, your will be set up with Facebook. Then following the similar steps like Twitter, you can update your status in by sending a text to the contact with the Facebook number.

These are some of the simple process to follow till Apple iPhone comes up with some innovative feature to update social networking via Siri directly. Till then one can enjoy the features of Siri on the move and have the advantages conveniently.

While most of us are always glad to see a new iPhone come along, there’s no doubt that recent news from the smartphone world has seen a fair degree of a attention focusing on the Galaxy Nexus from Samsung. This is the handset that comes running the so-called Ice Cream Sandwich, which is the Google operating system based around Android.

What’s the big deal?

There’s a lot of anticipation surrounding this handset because not only will the latest Android update feature a wealth of features and functionality aimed at competing with the Apple iOS, the phone itself will also boast a formidable technical specification.

Samsung has clearly spent quite some time on developing this smartphone and inside the delicious styling youíll find a 1.2GHz dual core processor, 1GB of RAM and a huge 4.65-inch screen that features a 1280x720p resolution from the Super AMOLED display. So, as soon as you power it up and start enjoying the features of the Android 4.0 interface itís clear to see that Samsung mean business.

Feature perfect?

However, take a closer look and it comes as a bit of a surprise to see something like the camera, which is becoming such a competitive area of the smartphone tech-spec, is only a 5-megapixel offering. The new Apple iPhone 4S now sports an 8-megapixel camera, but when you use it the Samsung counterpart is actually surprisingly quick, delivers great shots and there’s also the capability for shooting 1080p video recording.

Secret ingredients

But it might just be that operating system upgrade that will pull in a lot of new customers, because Android already has many happy users and is fast becoming one of the number one phone OS currently in circulation. There are certainly plenty of great new features on this in this version of the software. FaceUnlock is the one everybody is talking about, which uses the front-facing camera to allow the owner to unlock their own phone by face recognition.

What’s more, this is one of the best operating systems for ensuring that you can quickly and easily amalgamate all of your social networking contacts and connections, which is becoming a core area of the way we use our smartphones. While many rival handsets do much the same thing, itís the way that Android manages to do this in such a seamless and stress-free fashion that makes it such an enjoyable experience for the handset owner.

Staying power

The Samsung Galaxy Nexus is up against stiff competition though, and not just from the latest version of the Apple phone either. HTC is one of the other most prolific manufacturerís of smartphones and their upcoming crop of releases is no exception.

And, where this company excels is in producing a user interface that works beautifully, as the existing Sense UI proves. With revisions of that in the pipeline and the HTC knack for adding new features and functionality on successive models, then the battle for smartphone supremacy could really hot up in the coming months.
