OLED Innovation Boost The Energy Efficiency

OLEDs are carbon-based organic light-emitting diodes which don’t use back-light and emit light when electricity is applied. OLED technology is much simpler and more efficient than LCD. It’s thinner and  also provides with better colours and faster response time. Today mobile devices use OLED technology, which not only offers better quality but also helps them save energy. Devices, such as TVs, rely on it too. Many big companies have been using this kind of technology. Aside from its great features, it has some disadvantages too. It costs a lot to make OLED panels, which is one of the reasons why LCD is still a leader. Another down side is the fact that the power-saving factor hasn’t yet reached the levels is was supposed to. However, scientists at the University of Bonn, Germany have been working on the project to boost energy efficiency of OLED technology and thus make an amazing innovation that will bring our mobile devices to a whole new level.

The problems

One of the biggest issues is the fact that a very small part of the electrical energy applied to an OLED pixel emits light. This can be changed using iridium or platinum but this will lead to much higher prices. Another issue is the way particles spin.

The research

Scientist in the laboratory of the University of Bonn have been doing research about the quantum-mechanical principles, which are in the core of the whole technology of screens. If we try and visualize OLED panels, they would be organic molecules in two layers – emissive and conductive, located between an electrical cathode and anode. This means that there are no electrons in the conductive layer, which makes room for new electrons coming from the other layer. Every time an electron fills up an empty space, energy formed as light is being released. Basically, this is the way it works but unfortunately there are more issues to be taken into account.

The spin of particles is essential too. Produced charges normally spin in the same way and push each other away, which leads to the emission of energy in the form of heat instead of light. What scientists are trying to do is add an organic layer that will improve the efficiency or OLED particles by delaying the emission of electrons. Organic molecules can’t usually keep energy as long as the spin needs but the new molecules that are used in the examination keep the charge longer.

Scientist are tying to find a way to avoid iridium and platinum elements in OLEDs, which would result into much cheaper and energy-efficient panels. This will put an end to screens that are as expensive as a mobile device itself and at the same time will provide with better specifications of the display and saving of energy. Researchers are busy trying to make this happen and create technology innovations that can boost energy efficiency. Companies, such as Samsung and LG, are some of the big names that rely on OLED technology. Many other manufacturers are looking forward to improvements and innovations in this field. It’s expected that in the future there will be transparent and flexible OLED panels that companies will offer. This will lead to a new age of technology and energy saving.
