3 Facebook Privacy Settings Everybody Should Know (+ Fun Videos)

A few months ago, Facebook popped up on most user’s screens, asking to modify privacy settings according to new settings offered by Facebook. Undoubtedly, many users just clicked through it and adapted the privacy settings suggested by Facebook, probably leaving your profile more open than it was before.

No matter what, it’s a good idea to be aware of what privacy settings are available in Facebook, so you control what others can see about you and what you do. Here are some of the most important settings:

#1: What you post, your personal information, etc…

Status updates, photos, video etc. Who do you want to be able to see everything you post?

To modify settings, click on “Account” in the upper right corner, when logged into Facebook. Select “Privacy Settings” from the drop-down menu and then “Profile Information”. Here you can customize several things. Pay attention to “Posts by Me”, you might not want your grandmother to view all of your drunken party photos.

#2: What Google can see…

Do you want your Facebook profile to show up in Google when somebody is searching for your name? If not, click on “Account” and select “Privacy Settings”, then click “Search”. To disable your Facebook profile in search engines, uncheck “Allow” next to “Public Search Results”.

#3: Hide your Friends List from strangers…

Don’t want strangers to see your friends on your public Facebook page? Go to your profile page, click on “Profile” in the upper right corner of Facebook. Now, find the “Friends” box in the left column, just a bit below your profile picture. Click on the blue pencil next to the “Friends”-text and uncheck “Show Friend List to everyone”.

Congratulations – you just lowered your chances of getting a Facebook stalker 🙂

Can’t post a Facebook parody video without posting this one too, it’s a classic:

  1. Dear Klaus,
Thanks for the information, this is extremely important.
I checked my settings as soon as I got this notification!
It always helps to know all the same.
    Hope you are well.

  2. Worthwhile information, although I’m generally (and specifically) paranoid and don’t really put much personal information on Facebook. I figure that the people I know well will already know it, and those I don’t, don’t need to know it.

    • That’s a good point – but I don’t think it’ll be harmful to you if you dialed the paranoia down just a tad, and put your firstname here, instead of “SP Guy” 🙂

  3. Not sure why, but privacy settings never worry me too much. As long as they don’t give out my home address, I’m pretty much ok 😉
