Guidelines for Evaluating Your Blog

blog_key_alu_keyboardA blog can be a very powerful medium for sharing information on a wide range of subjects, whether for business or personal purposes. However, after running your blog for some time, it is important to take time to critique it so as to assess its effectiveness. This way, you will be able to find ways of enhancing your blog’s design and content, and subsequently attract more traffic.

The following are some of the questions you need to ask yourself when evaluating your blog.

1. What is your blog’s purpose?

If you have no idea what your blog is all about, other people are not likely to have any clue either. This is why it is important to understand what the purpose of your blog is, and if possible to summarize it in a sentence. Are you blogging to entertain, inform, inspire or educate? Being able to define exactly what your blog is about is about will help you decide on an appropriate design, goals and content.

2. Is your content compelling?

You need to ensure that your content is compelling enough to motivate visitors to take a particular action. This could be sharing your post with others, commenting, donating to a cause or purchasing your service or product. For your content to be compelling, you need to write about subjects which your visitors can relate to. However, don’t make the mistake of trying to cover many ideas in a single post since you might only end up confusing the readers. Remember to include photos in your posts so as to make them more attractive.

3. Is your ‘About’ page effective?

The ‘About’ page is where you give the readers some insight about yourself, as well as your blog. Who are you? What are your qualifications in relation to the blog’s niche? What are your hobbies? Sharing such personal details will enable you to win the trust of your readers. Don’t forget to include a clear photo of yourself. However, when explaining what your blog is all about, don’t focus on yourself. Instead, you should inform the visitor how exactly they will benefit from reading your blog.

4. Are your colors relevant?

Colors are a very important element for any blog. The choice of color can either draw people in, or push them away from your blog. Therefore, you need to select colors which are relevant to your blog’s purpose. For instance, if you are running a blog targeting children, you cannot afford to use dull colors. Take time to learn what different colors mean so as to make the right choice.

5. Are your social media widgets easily visible?

If you have profiles on social media networks such as Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook or Google+, you need to ensure that readers can access them easily. It would be advisable to display your social media buttons in your header or on the upper section of your sidebar. However, you could also display them at the footer section so as encourage people to ‘like’ or follow you after reading your insightful posts.
