TechPatio Is A “Do Follow” Blog – Spreading The Link Love For Free

dofollow_blog_u_comment_i_followIn case you didn’t know, TechPatio has alwas been a do follow blog. Meaning, if you post a comment on techpatio.com and include the link to your website/blog, you will receive some of the so called “link love” or “link juice”.

Often nowadays, blogs are no follow blogs so if you post your link there, all you will (might) get are clicks from real visitors. Do Follow blogs also tells Google, and all the other search engine spiders out there, to follow the link to your site – you may even say that the do follow blog, TechPatio in this case, is “voting” for your site, due to the fact that you have a link on techpatio.com

TechPatio also uses the CommentLuv WordPress plugin which pulls your latest posts from your own blog using RSS feed technology. If you post a comment, a link to your latest blog post will automatically be included – you basically get two links, one to your main page and one to your blog post.

Bottom line, a do follow link is way better for your website, SEO wise, than a no follow link which is worthless in terms of SEO.

I cannot promise TechPatio will remain a do follow blog forever, but so far, I have no intention of changing it. If I do, I’ll be sure to make a note about it.

This post was inspired by MiscBytes, Social @ Blogging Tracker, Extreme John and WassupBlog which is also part of the “U Comment I Follow”-movement.

Please leave a comment below and tell us about your own blog – is it do follow or no follow?

  1. Now you should have a flood of commenters! 🙂 Consider this post Stumbled and Tweeted (I will have to do it from home PC later tonight). Thanks for the mention!

    • I read this the other day and there were only two comments, and I thought to myself ‘I wil come back in a couple of days to see how many comments’ and boy did you get a sh*t load of comments.

Hopefully this will bring you more visitors which may increase your earnings.
      .-= Jason´s last blog ..I hate the ‘back to school’ time… =-.

      • Hehe, I’m glad you came back! And yes, whille many of the comments are from me myself, I still received more comments on this post than any other post, as far can remember.

But I don’t expect to see any noticeable increase in income, it really takes many hits in order to get just a few clicks on adsense etc., and my visitors don’t seem to be too inclined to click the ads – yet 🙂

        • Im sure a lot of people google ‘do follow blogs’ and similar keywords which will bring you some traffic from google, and eventually they will start clicking on ads.
          .-= Jason´s last blog ..I hate the ‘back to school’ time… =-.

  2. People love dofollow blogs when it comes to comments, but you won’t be able to maintain a Google PageRank if you are leaking all your SEO juice out to everyone who comments, so that is why most people don’t allow comment follows. CommentLuv isn’t dofollow by default, just links back to someone’s blog.

    • My CommentLuv is actually DoFollow, but maybe because I changed some settings somewhere to allow it – I can’t remember 🙂

But I’m not so sure that you’re taking “pagerank away” from your own site anymore, by allowing dofollow links. Besides, even Google AdSense ads are dofollow 🙂

  3. Personally I care more for comments than I do for PR. As far as I am concerned PR is way overrated. Thanks for including me in this post, and I am proud to be the first one to Stumble this post.

    • Yes – when it comes down to “PR vs reader activity”, I think I’d prefer the latter. Specially since PR probably ain’t *that important* for a higher ranking on search terms either.

      • That is exactly right. When a prospective customer lands on your site does he have any idea about it’s PR? The answer is no. The only ones that care are other webmasters/bloggers and perhaps the misguided advertisers that are willing to formulate how much to offer you to advertise on your site.

    • I agree 🙂 Akismet does a good job in catching spam, I’ve never seen a single spam make it through akismet, but it sometimes catches real comments too, specially from Extreme John, so I’m keeping an eye on my spam queue few times a week.

  5. Even I am going to go for the Comment Luv PLugin for mu blog along with a do follow plugin. I was just wondering which do-follow plugin are you using currently…

    • I’m using the “Nofollow Case by Case” plugin. I *think* that’s also the one that removed nofollow from CommentLuv links (they are nofollow by default). This plugin allows me to simply add the text “/dontfollow” to the end of URL’s posted behind the authorname, to make it nofollow. I can’t do that with CommentLuv links though, so there I have to edit the comment manually, but I don’t think I’ve had the need to do so yet.

      • Ok…Thanks for telling me about the plugin..But I am not sure I understood “/dontfollow” you explained..
        .-= Shadow@Compute Live´s last blog ..Guild Wars 2 Trailer online =-.

        • Inside the wordpress dashboard where you can edit all the comments on your blog, you can also edit the URL that is attached to eash user, like “Shadow@Compute Live” has URL http://computelive.com/ – but if I didn’t wanted you to have “do follow”, with this plugin, I’d just add “/dontfollow” to the URL and the plugin will add rel=”nofollow” to the html link, so that it’s a no follow link. So basically the URL will look like http://computelive.com/dontfollow

          • Okk..Thats really helpful Thanks…

Sometimes there are decisions to be make, whether PR or visitors. However, I believe if you continue with your quality content, people will know the value of your site instead of just relying on PR alone. Besides, we all have our own rankings at heart. To me, you’re definitely surpassing it.

And thanks for the mention, also I’m glad the do-follow image looks fine in square format. ^^ Pleasure working with you.

    • That’s right – I just wish you had the CommentLuv plugin installed too 🙂 It’s hard to keep up with all the RSS feeds I’m following, so I usually take those with CommentLuv first as this also allows me to do a little bit of “marketing” if there’s anything I want to comment on. Non-CommentLuv blogs are usually go through when I have some spare time so the posts I’m reading from those blogs are often a few days old.

    • Hi Brett – thanks for visiting!

I’m glad to hear you’re also offering Do Follow links on your blog. And CommentLuv too, I see, not bad!! Unfortunately your sports blog doesn’t really interest me, unless you begin to cover European soccer too 🙂

  8. Hmm, you know, I’m not even sure what 40Tech is set up as, to be honest. But now you have me curious to look!

    • 40Tech is “no follow”, I just checked – and without CommentLuv plugin… Try to add CommentLuv if you want more comments 🙂

… and if you change it to do follow, you will have to quit your day job in order to keep up with all the incoming comments 😀

It certainly seems that most blogs are going down the Do Follow route these days, there is some argument over how this affects your Google PR, but not all popular websites have a high ranking PageRank, I think it all boils down to how many people can find your blog, not how high the Page Rank is!

  12. Hello Klaus,
I must admit that the “do Follow” and “u follow” terminology got me a little confused to start with, as I wasn’t quite grasping the context of what it actually meant, and why it was named in such a way. I think I understand a little more about it now, from reading your post. Is it about linking your name, to that of your site? (As when our names are automatically linked, and when you click on it, you are directed to the site?) Or is this linked with following blogs, like through the google connect incentive? I think I am still lost on what this all means. Would be good to understand the definition of “do follow” before understanding what it’s purpose is, and why it’s here. Can you help me with this?
.-= Ana´s last blog ..Dream as your light = live bright =-.

    • Hi Ana, nice to see you again!

I don’t blame you, it might be a bit technical. Let me try to explain.

The links you see behind your name and on your “Ana’s lost blog.. Dream as your light = live bright” text are the links back to your site. Usually they would be what is called “no follow”, so when the search engine spiders see your links at my site, they just “ignore” them – or they might follow them just to index.

But when doing a “do follow” link, it means that my site is telling the search engine spiders “hey go take a look at those links, I vouch for them!”. The more such links you get, the higher you are likely to rank on the search engine result pages.

I hope that made it a bit clearer otherwise feel free to ask again.

  13. Hello Klaus,

Nice to hear from you again, too. 🙂

Thank you for explaining, I appreciate it.

So, let me get this straight and clarified, those “do follow” links come from plugins such as “comment luv”? and they help to build your presence on the internet, by combining them in other sites?

Comment Luv is one of the first few plugins I have used, and I find it very useful as I like when people discover other people’s sites, and the idea of showing the last post is a brilliant way to connect others with their own site.

    Thank you so much. 🙂
.-= Ana´s last blog ..Dream as your light = live bright =-.

    • “Do follow” links does not come only from the CommentLuv plugin. The link you have on your name, “Ana” or “Extreme John” has and all the others, is also a “do follow” link. It’s just a more “generic” link counting as a “vote” for their site.

Whereas a CommentLuv link is much better because that way you’re linking to a post with the post title as keywords. When you put a link on the text “Dream as your light = live bright” – then you’re telling the search engine spiders that the page I’m linking to is about “Dream as your light = live bright”, so they are included in the algorithm to calculate your ranking in the search engines on those keywords.

(Small disclaimer though: I’m not sure about how much “link juice” actually flows through the CommentLuv links if one is using FeedBurner for RSS feeds, as the link then goes through feedburner to log the click and then redirects to the blog post – but you’re not doing that, so you’re getting it all 🙂 )

      • Hello Klaus,

I see now, thank you. 🙂

Has the terminology of “do follow” been around for a while? As I have been encountering it, only just recently. Did they use a different kind of wording for it before?

It’s quite amazing how all this works, isn’t it. 🙂

        • Hi again Ana,

I’ve known about the “nofollow” thing for some time, since I’m in the web development business, but it’s only recently – when I started blogging – I heard about “dofollow” or “do follow” term, at first I was also a bit confused but once I saw it mentioned with regards to “nofollow links”, I quickly figured out what it was for and since I do web development, I also instantly knew why many bloggers prefer to leave comments on “dofollow blogs”.

          • Hello Klaus,
Do you have any idea where they call it that?
            Ana
.-= Ana´s last blog ..Dream as your light = live bright =-.

            • Why they call it “dofollow”? I would imagine it’s because the opposite is called “nofollow” and I think that was something the search engines invented, as a way for webmasters to add the “nofollow” tag to outgoing links in order to tell the search engine spiders NOT to follow that link.

For “normal” people, a link’s a link. But for those with some search engine optimization skills or interest, there’s a huge difference between “dofollow” and “nofollow”, as previously explained 🙂

  14. Welcome to the dofollow world of blogging; I hope it’s very successful for you, as I believe it was for me once I added it.

    • Hello Mitch,
Nice to see you here. 🙂
So it is something that you add as well?
I am still a little confused by it, but the understanding of it all will eventually sink.
I think it’s the terminology that I am getting baffled from, so choosing that over the actual understanding. Unecessary, but challenging nonetheless.

      • Yes, I went dofollow last July, and I have to say I think it’s been a boon. It was around the same time I added the CommentLuv plugin as well. I’ve written about it often on my blog; I don’t worry about page rank or any of that other stuff. I figure if people are willing to stop by and leave comments, good comments that is, they deserve a link.

        • Hello Mitch,
I wasn’t quite sure what the “do follow” meant, so I searched for various meanings and found a couple of plugins, to see whether I can experience this. Since installing ‘Lucia Link Love’ I can see the amount of comments left on my blog, both through the admin panel and the actual blog. Is this a feautre of a “do follow” blog? Also I have noticed my latest blog entry is getting a lot more coverage, and new people are commenting on it. Is that also another feature of the “do follow”? Driving in more traffic?
.-= Ana´s last blog ..Dream as your light = live bright =-.

          • Actually Ana, I don’t think seeing stats has anything to do with dofollow, but it could be a function of that particular plugin.

As for the other, yes, you will see more comments with a dofollow blog, especially one that also has commentluv, which yours does. People know that if they leave a good comment they’ll get the benefit of not only a link, but people might follow them back to their blogs. It works all around.

    • Yes, just too bad that you didn’t comply with my comment rules about not using keywords as your name, so your website link has been removed, thus no dofollow link love for you – or as The Soup Nazi would have said: “No soup for you! Come back one year. NEXT!”

  20. That is exactly right. When a prospective customer lands on your site does he have any idea about it’s PR? The answer is no.

  21. Indeed, the do follow plug in do entice commenters into writing more relevant comments on do follow blogs if only because they are assured of high quality link because of this plug in.

  24. I commend you for offering the dofollow. Most seo info seems to say that it isn’t “worth” nearly as much without the anchored text, so of course that often results in spam posts filled with keywords.

As for your Adsense, I’d guess that you are probably smartpriced. Social traffic just doesn’t click very much. Have you considered using a plugin that only shows your Adsense to search engine visitors? There are at least a few of those. It might help your numbers, as would optimizing pages where you place Adsense to be a bit more focused. There’s nothing wrong with a general interest blog, it doesn’t pull up very good Adsense ads though.

    Good luck!
