As the LCD technology evolved, more and more was convinced that the days of plasma TV’s were over, and several manufacturers have even opted to completely abandon the production of plasma displays.
New figures from the U.S. for the second quarter of this year shows that plasma technology is far from dead. Compared with the quarter before, there has been an increase of 31% in the number of units sold and an increase of 35% in turnover.
During the same period, the LCD television didn’t do quite as well, here the curve has been flat for the number of TV sales, while turnover fell 7%.
One of the reasons for the huge success of plasma technology is the new 2010 models from Panasonic, Samsung and LG, which breaks with the large energy consumption, plasma screens are known to have. The new models have had the energy cut down so much that it actually matches the LCD technology.
The price is also important for the choice of TV, and here the plasma technology is able to offer TV in 42 “-50” category for a reasonable price, which attracts consumers.
Consumers are choosing 42″ and 50″ plasma because of historic (low) price levels. History shows that consumers prefer larger displays, and generally will migrate to these larger displays as price points help them make them more attainable.

My main TV is a 2 year old Panasonic 42″ Plasma HD TV which has a great picture and color. My secondary TV is a 6 months old Thomson 40″ LCD Full HD which is crystal clear but lacks some of the contrast offered by plasma TV’s. It comes with a very slim border though, which makes the screen look even bigger than it actually is.
What TV do you have, LCD or Plasma – and why?
I have a pretty good mix of LCD and Plasma’s, the biggest problem with the Plasma TV’s is how much heat they throw off.

I never really thought about how much heat they produce compared to LCD. I just noticed that my 40″ LCD gets quite hot. I’ll have to put my hands on the plasma to compare it next time I get in that room 🙂
I think buying plasma is a good deal compared to LCD. As it has pretty nice rates along with wide range of models. It will be the first choice of people for its excellent picture quality.
