Rumor: MobileMe Subscription To Be Free?

According to a rumor picked up by MacDailyNews, it is being said that “Apple is planning to make MobileMe free”.

MobileMe is usually a $99 (€79) yearly cost which will do a bunch of cloud-based things to your Mac and iPhone/iPad, such as providing you with an IMAP e-mail address, an iDisk, a place to put a website, online gallery, syncing your contacts, bookmarks etc. wirelessly and so on. One of the other cool features is “Find my iPhone” which allows you to send a message to your stolen/lost iPhone and even enable the GPS and see on a map where it is – or simply wipe it clean so that the thief doesn’t get access to your data.

As to when MobileMe will be free (if the rumor is correct) MacDailyNews says there are no other information but “sooner than later… depends on certain facilities going operational”.

The facilities are probably the giant data center built by Apple in North Carolina.

  7. I hope this holds true! I haven’t used it in the past, but if it’s free, I have no reason not to!

    • I didn’t want it when I got my first Mac in 2006, but when I got the iPhone in 2007, I just wanted something that worked easy and MobileMe (.Mac, back then) did it. But It would be great if it becomes free, wouldn’t mind spending that €79 a year in iTunes/App Store instead…
