How To Make Me UnFollow You On Twitter

twitter_logoWhen I decide who to follow on Twitter, it’s usually a mix of some of the following parameters:

  • Their ratio of following/followers
  • Their amount of followers
  • The language they tweet in
  • What they tweet about (topics)
  • How often they tweet
  • How many RT’s
  • How many useless quotes from “famous people”

And then I also look for “Get a bazillion followers in less than 30 seconds just by looking out your window!”-kinda tweets. If any of those appears, I won’t follow. Now, I won’t go through their entire history to spot those, I don’t mind if they appear every now and then, just make sure they’re not above the fold when I look at your twitter stream to decide if I want to follow you or not.

I do like find it funny, however, those tweets where it says “get a thousand followers for free, visit http://…..” – and then the user himself only has a few hundred followers, or less. How ironic.

Should you pass my “approval process” and I decide to follow you – then here’s what I would prefer not to see from you, as it will only make me unfollow you again:

Note the timeframe – all those tweets within minutes… and that’s not even all of them (I just couldn’t fit more within the screenshot).

I don’t mean to bash on that particular user retweeting all those stories, but I did actually unfollow him. If you wanna RT like that, it’s fine by me, I just don’t follow you (anymore) 🙂

Then again, there are Twitter users who tweet what they had for lunch and they tweet when they’re recycling that same lunch later on, into the toilet. That’s also fine by me, but I probably won’t follow you.

Point of the story: Twitter is what you make it to be. If you decide to follow all the lunch recyclers because that’s what you like, then that’s perfectly okay. If you prefer to follow those who RT news stories from Disney Land 24/7, that’s also a way to use Twitter and perfectly okay.

Me? I try to follow those who are in the tech/blogging/SEO/marketing business. And maybe a celebrity every now and then.

Happy tweeting – and don’t forget to follow me on Twitter!

  3. I see in the picture here I have a RT :), thank you for that.
I rarely unfollow tweep there, just sometimes block and report who abuse me. The most important lesson I learned from Twitter is that you have to learn to say no and ignore. Ignore all annoys, just focus on what make you benefit and you love. In my tweetdesk, I only have 3 columns: DM, Mention and my group. But I rarely take a look at DM (maybe once a day). The all friend column is so noisy and you might lost your mind if you take care that column.

    • You’re right – you do have a retweet there, what a coincidence 🙂

I really need to start organizing my TweetDeck more, so I can have a group/column with the “tweeps” that I really care about and another column just for everything.

  7. I had a similar post on my personal blog a while ago –
    http://www.israelimom.org/general/613/who-not-to-follow-on-twitter.html/

So many accounts are managed by bots these days, with the owners, at best, logging in occasionally to add a “human” tweet here and there. Life’s too short to be reading bots – I just unfollow.

    • I see that we agree quite a lot when it comes to determining whether or not to follow somebody. Hopefully that means I’m on the right track 🙂

  8. I hate that too. That happens to me a lot of times when people use service like retweet.t and they get credits for retweeting. I always unfollow them asap as well. BTW, I am featuring this post in my “Sunday’s Best” wrap up. Stop by later tomight and check it out. I also retweeted this 🙂

  10. Yeah, those “how to get a bazillion followers while you sleep” morons drive me nuts, you should take this post and make a set of rules for Twitter etiquette or Tweetiquette, or a name for the morons, call them the Untweetables.
