Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard Ready For Pre-Order. What About Malta?

Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard pre-order August 28Apple is now offering its users the ability to pre-order Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard from the Apple Store.

You can get a single-user license for just $29 and a Family pack license (install on up to 5 Mac’s within the same household) for just $49. One should note though, these are Leopard upgrades, so if you don’t already have Leopard, I don’t think they will work – I wonder what the prices are then? Probably $129 as they usually charge for a full single user license.

In addition to the single user and family pack licenses, you can also get a Server version for $499 or the new Mac Box Set for just $169 which includes Snow Leopard, iLife ’09 and iWork ’09.

New in Snow Leopard?

Better, faster, easier
Snow Leopard enhances your entire Mac experience. In ways big and small, it gets faster, more reliable, and easier to use.

  • Activate Exposé right from the Dock.
  • Wake from sleep and shut down your Mac faster than before.
  • Install it more quickly and get back 7GB of disk space.
  • Enjoy dozens more refinements for everything from iChat to Preview and more.

Next-generation technologies
New core technologies in Snow Leopard unleash the power of today’s advanced hardware and prepare Mac OS X for future innovation.

  • 64-bit support, the next big step for the Mac. All key system applications are now 64-bit so they can take advantage of all the memory in your Mac.
  • Grand Central Dispatch, a revolutionary new way for software to get the most from multicore processors.
  • OpenCL, a new technology that unleashes the power of graphics processors to accelerate application performance.

QuickTime X
As the next generation of media players, it’s built on new core technologies and advances modern media and Internet standards.

  • Watch your videos in a clean, uncluttered interface with the new QuickTime Player.
  • Record audio or video using the built-in iSight camera and microphone in your Mac.
  • Trim your media to the perfect length.
  • Easily publish your media to MobileMe or YouTube.

And much, much more, you can read about here: Mac OS X Snow Leopard at Apple.

Here in Malta it’s still unknown when Snow Leopard becomes available. The authorized dealer (SG Solutions, iCentre) is trying their best to be able to have it by the release date, but I seriously doubt we will see it in Malta until at least one week later than that, maybe even more.

Not that I’m unhappy with Leopard, not at all, but I’m really looking forward to installing Snow Leopard on my Macs and see just how much faster it is – and the new QuickTime X player looks really cool too.

    • I think SG Solutions is on “part time” or something during summer period, that’s probably why the answering machine is on.

I’ll send an e-mail to the guy in there I know, tomorrow, to see if they have some updated news. I would hate spending the weekend *without* Snow Leopard, knowing that everybody else out of Malta will be installing it 🙂

      • I’ve fired off a few emails to their regular email addresses and will see if i get a response back. Last time I did it took them a week to reply to me… not to mention that it will be a miracle that they sell the upgrade for 20EUR. Even a DVI-VGA adapter costs more than that from them.. lol

        • I also just sent an e-mail, so I’ll be sure to update about it.

Since it’s $29 over there, I don’t think we’ll see it for just €20 here, do you? More like 25-30 euros. But that’s fine by me.

Yeah you’re right about the DVI-VGA adapter, I’m going to need a MacBook Pro -> DVI adapter soon, so that’s probably another €25 or something 😀
