600,000 iPhone 4s Pre-Ordered, AT&T Suspends & Cancels Some

In just a single day, Apple managed to move 600,000 iPhone 4’s. According to Apple, that’s the largest number of pre-orders they have ever taken in one day and AT&T says it’s ten times as many order as for iPhone 3GS.

Lots of things went down during the day of the pre-orders (June 15th), first the “ships by” date went back to July 2nd and later it went even further back, to July 14th. There’s also reports that AT&T has started e-mailing customers to cancel their “ships by May 28th” pre-orders, making them pre-order again but at the new July 14th date.

I’m surprised to see so many iPhone 4’s pre-ordered in just one day, but I’m sure there are many people with iPhone 3G’s (not 3Gs) just waiting for a new generation of iPhones to come, before upgrading and agreeing to another 2 year contract.

Unfortunately this doesn’t look too good for the expected “July launch” of iPhone 4 in Denmark, but we can always hope that Apple will not pull iPhones from their International stock, just to be able to satisfy  their home market in the beginning.

Here’s the official Apple statement:

Yesterday Apple and its carrier partners took pre-orders for more than 600,000 of Apple’s new iPhone 4. It was the largest number of pre-orders Apple has ever taken in a single day and was far higher than we anticipated, resulting in many order and approval system malfunctions. Many customers were turned away or abandoned the process in frustration. We apologize to everyone who encountered difficulties, and hope that they will try again or visit an Apple or carrier store once the iPhone 4 is in stock.
