Top 10 Most Hyped Gadgets Of All Time

PC World combined a list of what they believe are the top 10 most hyped IT products of all time:

1. Apple iPad

As Steve Jobs showed at his keynote presentation when announcing the iPad, “The last time there was this much excitement about a tablet, it had some commandments written on it” – The Wall Street Journal.

2. Apple Newton

This Apple “message-pad” was launched in 1993 and could be considered an early PDA. While it was a great idea, the software for handwriting recognition apparently wasn’t too good and the price of the device itself also wasn’t too good.

3. One Laptop per child

A great idea but bad timing for the launch and a price twice as high as expected, quickly made netbooks a more interesting choice.

4. Windows Vista

In 2006 we were led to believe by Microsoft that their Windows XP replacement, Windows Vista, would be a fantastic operating system. It didn’t quite work out for them.

5. Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

COD MW2 made a lot of money but critics said it wasn’t anything else but “more call of duty”, when comparing it to Modern Warfare 1.

6. Nintendo Virtual Boy

The only thing you gained from Nintendo’s “virtual reality” device was a headache if you played it too long.

7. Segway

The inventor, Dean Kamen, said in 2001 that his device would change the way cities are built. Something the investors liked the sound of, but today you don’t see Segway in much other use than security guards in malls and likewise.

8. Samsung Q1 Origami

A really expensive device running Origami by Microsoft. A strong advertising campaign in 2006 wasn’t enough to secure Q1’s spot between laptops and PDA’s.

9. Apple iPhone

Apple didn’t stop hyping this device even after announcing it, releasing bits of information up until it’s launch.

10. Sony PSP

When movies for the PSP costs almost as much as a DVD, the PSP was bound to have a hard time in the market, being used mostly as a gaming device.

Over to you… do you agree with the list above? If not, what products would you rather have seen in the top 10? Leave a comment below!

  7. I would not mind having all of those gadgets myself. I’m an addict when it comes to gadgets so this list is definitely one of those that will make me go “bazonka”, lol. Same as John, never heard about the virtual boy. My kids have a variety of Nintendo related games and this one, they did not even know off. Kudos

  18. Gotta be the Segway in N1… the amoutn of hype before its launch was stratospheric.. we were lead to believe that the biggest thing since wll anything was going to be released on a certain date.. and I remember for a few months were all in some kinda limbo trying to figure out what the hell was going to be announced .. perhaps the end of time ???

When it is was finally announced after many delays, it was such a deflating experience and disappointing item that it killed any future prospect that this thing could have had had it not been hyped that way..

  19. Yesssss – the virtual boy – nothing felt better than having your eyes burnt out from black and red screens. Let’s not forget the Game Gear as well – wasting all your batteries every day haha.
