Review: Sony MDR-570LP Lightweight Fashion Stereo Headphones

Sony tries to sell you their MDR-570LP headphones by saying they have:

  • Slim and light headband that does not mess up your hairstyle.
  • Neodymium magnet delivers powerful sound.
  • Pressure-relieving urethane-cushioned earpads for comfortable fit.

Slim and light headband? Oh yeah, no question about it. These headphones are really lightweight and weighs just 110 gram without cord (3.88 oz). In fact, they’re so light that you would think they are cheap copies, to be honest, at first. But when you start to touch them some more and inspect the metal’ish cans enclosing the 30mm drivers, you quickly realize that these are anything but cheap knock-offs. Since I don’t carry a fancy hairstyle, I can’t say how effective the light headband is in not messing up your hairstyle, but I believe they do a good job at keeping your hair intact.

Neodymium magnet that delivers powerful sound? I’m no audiophile, but yeah, they do sound pretty good to me, considering the price tag on them. Sony says $49.99 but you can get them on Amazon for just over $30. For that price, it’s going to be hard to beat the sound quality.

Pressure-relieving urethane-cushioned earpads? I don’t know what they are or what they’re made of, the earpads, but they are really comfortable to wear. Here in Southern Europe, we’re seeing some hot temperatures at the moment, even inside where the air-condition is not able to fully cope all the time. I’ve been using these Sony MDR-570LP headphones for several hours at a time while working in front of the computer and they never started to bug me and got my ears uncomfortable warm.

In comparison, the $350 Beats Studio by Dr. Dre headphones that I have, with noise-canceling technology, haven’t even been used in the week that I had the MDR-570LP for testing. Obviously the Beats deliver a better sound but at a much higher price. However, just to enjoy your music in front of the computer or a music player while feeling comfortable, I always picked up the Sony headphones first.

Something clever I noticed about these, before reading the instructions, was how the cans fold flat, making them easier to transport and also taking up less space.

For the audiophile or specifications-minded readers, I can also mention that Sony MDR-570LP are fitted with 30mm dome type drivers (CCAW voice coil) with a frequency response of 12-22,000 Hz and 24 Ohms impedance at 1 kHz. Their sensitivity are 105 dB/mW. They connect to your computer or music player via a gold-plated stereo mini plug.

In the box, besides the headphones, you’ll find a fancy cord adjuster, warranty information and operating instructions. The cord adjuster might not even be needed, as the cord is quite short as it is, in my opinion (1.2m).

Worth buying? I definitely think so. If you’re just looking for headphones that delivers good sound quality at a very reasonable price and at the same time being lightweight and very compact for easy fitting in your bag, these are a must-have. Check’em out!

  1. I really want to own one. My ipod earphone was missing. I did not know where it is now. I might have misplaced it somewhere. But I do have plans of getting a headphone. I might get this one. This is really a good to know information. about the pricing, I dont care so long as I am comfortable. But I will go and check amazon. 🙂
