Google Giving Up on Censorship-China?

Google will no longer be cooperating with the Chinese censorship authorities, they said in a recent press release:

We have decided we are no longer willing to continue censoring our results on Google.cn, and so over the next few weeks we will be discussing with the Chinese government the basis on which we could operate an unfiltered search engine within the law, if at all. We recognize that this may well mean having to shut down Google.cn, and potentially our offices in China.

Google has informed the US government, which will now try to get an explanation from the Chinese government on the alleged hacking attempts originating from China.  If Google does not succeed in making a deal with China for a search engine without censorship, they will shut down Google China and their offices where around 700 employees work.

Contrary to other parts of the world, Google is not the biggest search engine in China where “only” one third of all searches are done by Google. The most popular search engine in China is Baidu.

What do you think, does China deserve it? Is this is a good move by Google, considering their “don’t be evil” slogan? Leave a comment below!

  1. I think there is only so much you can do to accomodate people, and Google has just realised that China doesn’t seem all the effort they have to put in.

    • I agree. Google started a search engine for China and they follow what they asked for – to censor results. (and more.) And then they started hacking Google so Google decided to respond with uncensored of things. I also say screw China.
