Is It Your Hard Drive Slowing Down The Computer Or Something Else?

laptop-drive-hdd-diskIt is a common scenario that every person owing a computer experiences at one point of time- complaining about the sluggish performance of the computer. The computer has got a lot of stuff like pictures, movies, music, eBooks, apps, software programs etc. It also slows down because the computer is busy picking spyware, Internet browser toolbars and adware. Well too some extent it is a fact that about 99% of these things can cause a problem.

However, think that the main function of the hard drive is to preserve and store the files and data. If this primary function is detrimental to the [tp lang=”en” only=”y”]PC performance[/tp][tp not_in=”en”]PC performance[/tp] then it is actually a bad design flaw. The piling of your data, files, music, videos and pictures on the hard drive affecting, there is nothing you gain if you delete them. Believe it.

It is a common misconception that has taken place in people’s mind year after year. It is the lack of understanding the difference between storage and main memory. The logic behind this tells that any machine bearing a junk will hamper the performance. For e.g. like a trunk of the car, the storage is the place where you stuff your things. The data, files etc. that you put on the hard drive lies like a doormat unless you require them. The computer doesn’t do anything with it, rather happily ignores thousands of gigabytes of music and movies unless you tell to access it. Think the storage to be as an attic/basement in the house where you stuff the things that you are not using. These things remain out of mind and sight as far as the computer performance matters.

So, when you throw command to the computer to access particular file/data it loads to the main memory. Hence, the short term memory that is holding everything is in use and it is where the computer is working. The space is primarily smaller than the storage and is sharing all the running data and programs. Hence, the more programs, apps, data etc. running simultaneously the less memory to go around and the busier the hard drive becomes. All the data, files, programs, apps running start competing for 2 resource the most i.e. memory allocation and CPU time which is the cause behind the slowdown. So, the full hard drive is not what you put on the hard disk but what you open when it is running.

Over the time, PCs become sluggish in their performances. Below mentioned are some of the factors responsible for the performance degradation.

  • Anti-malware
  • Fragmentation
  • Resident programs
  • Malware
  • Viruses

Out of the above mentioned, some of them might be terrible things affecting the hard drive performance and at times crashing every now and then. With lot of stuff stored and you end up running it more and simultaneously that seriously conjure up your hard drive speed. The faster way to improve the speed is to disable/uninstall the software programs, apps, and toolbars etc. that you think you don’t need it anymore.
