Test of iBoysoft NTFS for Mac

iBoysoft NTFS for Mac is a small utility, so it has a quick download and a few steps of installation. When the utility is installed for the first time, we can see a window displaying how to use this utility. In the same window, it reminds us this software will live in menu bar and asks us to click the icon to launch it.

Instead, we click on the big blue “Start” button first and we are led to personalized settings. We keep the software on its default settings to launch at login and automatically mount NTFS drives. Then we click on the “Complete” to complete the settings and click on the icon at menu bar to launch it.

As soon as we launch it, we can see a list of mounted NTFS volumes that are connected to the Mac for test. By clicking the small black triangle beside the NTFS volume, we can open or eject it easily. On top of that, there is a “Eject all” option as well. It is really helpful when many NTFS volumes need to be ejected.

We know in advance that most key features of iBoysoft NTFS for Mac are built in “Disk Management” feature. In the Disk Management window, we can see a list of NTFS disks and a list of other disks. After we select an NTFS disk, we can see the detailed disk information including disk capacity, free space, device name, mount path and file system. The operations we can conduct on NTFS disks consist of Open, Unmount, Check disk and Erase disk.

1. Read and write to NTFS disks on Mac running macOS Catalina

We click on the “Open” button to open the testing NTFS disk. The NTFS disk is mounted in read-write mode automatically by default. We delete, edit, rename, and move files from Mac to the NTFS disk and feel the data transferring speed is noticeably fast. We don’t come across any bugs and instabilities during the writing operations. It seems that the NTFS write support exists natively on macOS Catalina.

 2. Repair file system errors

The “Check disk” option in this utility is simulating the chkdsk command in Windows and achieving it on macOS. After we click on it, it starts to detect and repair minor NTFS file system errors. It has worked very well for our testing NTFS disk. But for severely corrupted NTFS disks due to serious partition table corruption, file system corruption or bad sectors, this feature can’t help.

3. Erase data on NTFS disks

We can erase all data on NTFS disks on Mac in Disk Utility and assign the disk a new file system. However, the file systems we can choose from exclude NTFS. If we want to keep the disk NTFS-formatted, the “Erase disk” option is a good fit. By clicking it, we can get a blank NTFS disk for new data.

4. Reformat other file systems to NTFS

Microsoft NTFS file system has been optimizing for over two decades and it has been proved to be very stable in handling large files and large disk capacity. Therefore, we don’t mind reformatting our test disk to NTFS. After we select the test disk which is formatted with FAT32 and click on “Erase to NTFS”, we have an NTFS disk for use in less than one minute.

Note: Both “Erase disk” and “Erase to NTFS” will wipe off all data on your disk, so remember to back up important files first before clicking on those two buttons.

Verdict

iBoysoft NTFS for Mac is truly a comprehensive solution for managing NTFS disks on macOS Catalina. With a simple and straightforward interface, we can easily have full read and write to NTFS disks and eject/mount/unmount/repair/erase NTFS disks.
