How to Make Your Office Space More Comfortable

Do you strive under pressure, or you’re more of a laid-back type, whose creative juices start to flow in a relaxed environment? The first type of person is more efficient in a strict office environment whereas, others find comfort and tranquillity inspiring. What if we told you that you don’t have to choose between those two?

Whether you work from home or from the company’s premises, comfort should be one of the most important things for your efficiency. Decorating a home office is up to you, while at the company, you need to be aware of the rules. Here’s how to make your office space cosier, without violating the rules.

1. Comfortable furniture

When choosing the furniture for your office, make sure that it’s adequate for you. What does that mean? Your desk should be spacious enough so it can fit a desktop computer or a laptop. In addition to that, you need to store all the other office supplies you need, without making the mess and clutter. Look for the adjustable height desks. If your job requires a lot of sitting, being able to stand up for a while is heaven’s gift for your spine.

On the other hand, a comfortable chair that improves your posture is a must. You will no longer be distracted by the back or muscle pain while working. Don’t forget to properly adjust the arm and headrests for your height, as those are the most important things for the great posture.

2. Remove the clutter

Having a large desk is good; however, it doesn’t mean that you should use it as a storage space. You can have a couple of necessary papers, documents and notebooks on your desk, but that should exclude all the files, magazines and reports. For maximum comfort in your office, you need to find a proper storage space for papers and other records.

Your desk and office need to be interactive. Everything you need should be at your fingerprints. This means that if you need a printer or a landline phone, you don’t have to walk to the other end of the building to use them. Be aware of the furniture arrangement. Having enough and not too much furniture is crucial. You don’t want to be tripping over unnecessary chairs and tables while you work.

3. Let there be light

Did you know that darker rooms and spaces tend to have invalidating effects on work efficiency and creativity? Weak lights decrease your mood and focus, making you feel drowsy and tired. That’s why having plenty of natural light in your office is vital. However, some offices don’t have the luxury of having large windows. Can you make it up somehow?

Adding enough artificial light is essential, but be aware of the type of lights and light bulbs you choose. Does it really matter? Besides spending less money, LED lights are more beneficial than regular ones. Having the proper lighting takes away the pressure from your eyes, so you’ll be able to work effectively and not get too tired. Who finds sitting in the dark comfortable?

4. Décor

Everyone loves having a personalised office. You’re usually allowed to have a couple of personal items on your desk or in the office. But not too many to minimise the possible distractions. Besides personal belongings, you can decorate your office in a classy manner. What does it include?

To make your office more comfortable and homier, consider incorporating different fabrics. Throw rugs are perfect items for making your space more comfortable. You can toss one over your chair or couch- they will add a warm, comfy yet professional look to your office. Their unique texture and various colours improve your office’s style and cosiness during colder winter months and sunny summer days.

5. Bring the nature inside

Working outside in the fresh air is marvellous. However, it’s not always convenient due to different and varying weather conditions. Instead of mourning for nature, bring the plants and greenery inside. Think about adding a couple of green plants of flowers to your office space.

When choosing the plant for your office, make sure that it doesn’t need constant care. You won’t be able to water it or tend it during the vacation or weekends, so opt for something less demanding, but still cute.  Plants are great for keeping the office space fresh and producing oxygen. They freshen up usually dull offices and make them seem more pleasant and enjoyable.

Conclusion

Having a comfortable office shouldn’t be a luxury. With little effort and personalisation, you can create and design the office of your dreams. Make sure that your space is clean and well-arranged so you can undisturbedly function in it. That is a real comfort.

  1. I totally agree with you on the light aspect. When I have to work on something where I have to concentrate, I tend to need more light than when working on a rather boring task.
I would also add the aspect of fresh air – I know that not everybody has the luxury of opening a window in the office, but fresh air helps me be my most concentrated self – if there is not too much noise from the outside.
And I have one more tip for furnishing an office: I would always aim for two different places where you can sit and work: for instance, at a desk and a small couch or something else. I know this would be a tremendous luxury in most offices, but for me, it helps to stay comfortable without fatigue back pain, and a change of the sitting accommodation kind of gives me a fresh start with renewed energy.
Thanks for this article – the best work environment helps so much with productivity!

  3. Thanks for sharing this great post. I agree with you that “a comfortable chair that improves your posture is a must” and I want to add that finding the appropriate chair height is important. To do this, you need to stand in front of the chair. Adjust the seat high or low in order to match with your kneecap.

  4. It is really amazing ideas you wrote. I agree with you; employees are comfortable when office is comfort with furniture. I suggest compactor storage system to more comfort for hold files and compactors.
