Apple announces First States getting Apple Wallet IDs and Driver’s Licenses

Check out which US states are among those where you can add your ID to your Apple device.

A total of eight states shall be the first to allow residents to add their driver’s license or state identification card directly to their Apple Watch or iPhone.

Via a press release on Wednesday, Apple announced the feature that allows iPhone users to store their ID within the Wallet app shall first be implemented in Arizona and Georgia. These will be followed by Connecticut, Maryland, Oklahoma, Iowa, Kentucky and Utah.

According to Apple, the main purpose for having your state ID available on your phone is for traveling, that is, simply show your phone at airport security checkpoints. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will enable airport security checkpoints and lanes in participating airports as the first places where people can use their driver’s license or state ID stored in the Wallet.

Apple’s vice president of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet Jennifer Bailey said, “The addition of driver’s licenses and state IDs to Apple Wallet is an important step in our vision of replacing the physical wallet with a secure and easy-to-use mobile wallet. We are excited that the TSA and so many states are already on board to help bring this to life for travelers across the country using only their iPhone and Apple Watch, and we are already in discussions with many more states as we’re working to offer this nationwide in the future.”

TSA Administrator David Pekoske said, “This new and innovative mobile driver’s license and state ID initiative with Apple and states around the country will enable a more seamless airport security screening experience for travelers. This initiative marks a major milestone by TSA to provide an additional level of convenience for the traveler by enabling more opportunities for touchless TSA airport security screening.”

Driver’s licenses and state IDs available in Wallet shall provide a fast, easy and more secure way for people to present proof of their identity using only their iPhone or Apple Watch. Once a participating state starts offering this feature to its residents, customers will be able to add their driver’s license or state ID to Wallet and just tap their iPhone or Apple Watch to show it to the TSA, without the need to take out their physical card or handing over their device.
