Salt as storage device in the future?Could salt be a future storage device?

Researchers at University of Edinburgh have worked on creating the perfect crystals out of salt. A process not easily accomplished.

By using two low-energy lasers, they managed to make use of an old discovery found years ago, that light can be used to create a crystal formation.

The researchers believe they can use this technique to improve traditional methods of optical data storage devices of up to 100 times more than we have today. One terabyte of data could be in the size of a sugarcube.

However, there’s still so much work left to be done that it’s currently unknown when we can expect to see salt “being a part” of our storage devices:

“There is much work to be done before these crystals can be used in practical applications such as optical storage, but we believe they have significant potential.”
Dr. Andy Alexander, University of Edingburgh

So when we’re running out of salt in the future, we can simply “scratch” away our storage for some saltiness! Sweet! er I mean, Salty!

It never ceases to amaze me how technology can make use out of something so simple and turn it into so useful
