Italian city, Venice, with all the (water) channels, now adds wireless channels to their reputation. The city council has decided that all the citizens should have access to free wireless Internet. To achieve that, they have built one of the biggest wireless networks in Europe which will also cover the 7 kilometer long channel, “Canal Grande” and public parks. Later this year they will expand to also include the islands of Murano and Burano. The “bedrock” for the wireless network is a 10,000 kilometer long fiber optic network that begun production in the 90’s.
If you’re planning a visit to Venice and try out their wireless Internet, you should wait till September. Only then will it be available for tourists as well, but not free, you will be charged 5 euro per day.
