Mario was Nintendo’s flagship gaming character since its inception in the gaming industry. The office of the Nintendo of America’s landlord, Mario Segale, not only lent his name to the character, but also shares striking resemblance with the in game character when it comes to the face.
The legend goes like this; Nintendo of America was facing financial difficulties and the landlord, Mario Segale was mad about the late rent payments. One day, he stormed into the office of Nintendo of America demanding the overdue rent. This is when the employees there designed a new character that looked like him (the non-grumpy him) and named it Mario, as a prank. The rest, as everyone knows, is history!
2) Storage Saving Techniques
Video games that run into gigabytes and multiple DVDs are the default in today’s gaming world, but what about the times when the first Mario game was launched? Believe it or not, the developer team had to fit in all the graphics and other data within a 40 kilobyte disc which is even smaller than the size of a generic word document. In order to accommodate this, the developer team came up with the idea of reducing the graphics of the fame.
One such step was to remove the necessity to show Mario’s lips by giving him a slightly oversized moustache that would cover it. A number of other space saving ideas were incorporated by the team when the Super Mario game was being developed.
