American news sites reports that Yahoo has purchased micro-blogging platform Tumblr for 1.1 billion dollars.
Apparently the board at Yahoo approved the deal Sunday evening and it’s expected that Yahoo will announce the deal during Monday. This will be the biggest purchase Yahoo has made, since Marissa Meyer took over as CEO in June of 2012.
According to analysts, Tumblr will help make Yahoo more attractive with young people, while Tumblr will generate an income for Yahoo from advertising.
Tumblr is currently used by more than 100 million people while Yahoo has about 700 million visitors each month.
For me, Tumblr has always been “the weird blogging space”. Recently I started watching Sons of Anarchy (yes I know, I’m a bit late to the party), and I was wondering why Gemma has a scar on her chest (I missed the obvious connection, you’ll know what I mean if you’ve seen the show), so I went googling – and lo’ and behold, there was a Tumblr site fully dedicated to “Gemma’s scar”, including photos. How crazy is that? Well, if you’re more into other stuff, say, girls in bikinis, I’ve heard there’s a ton of Tumblr blogs with such photos on them as well…
That’s interesting turn. Google bought Twitter, Yahoo is buying Tumblr, I just expect good things from this deal.
Has there ever been a time when a big site being bought out has ended well for the users? Thinking of Facebook buying Instagram, Twitter buying Tweetdeck etc. Yahoo is on the way out compared to 10 years ago, seems to me more likely that they’ll take Tumblr with them than vice versa!
