Apple developing iPad Pro with Wireless Charging, New iPad Mini

Apple is currently developing a brand new version of the iPad Pro that can support wireless charging, according to a Bloomberg report by Mark Gurman and Debby Wu.

To make this possible, Apple shall be switching to a glass back for the new models, instead of the aluminum material used on the rear of every iPad released by far.

The Cupertino, California-based company is testing a magnetic charging system for the new iPad Pro that is quite similar to the MagSafe connector introduced with the iPhone 12 phone units last year. The company may also include reverse wireless charging, or “bilateral” charging capabilities in the new iPad Pro, which would allow the iPad to serve as a wireless charging point itself, according to the report.

The wireless charging model will not be ready until next year.

The tech giant is also working on the first iPad Mini redesign in six years, aiming to keep the momentum going for a category that saw increased sales during the pandemic.

The iPad Mini will sport narrower screen bezels. It is unknown whether it will switch to Touch ID on the power button like the iPad Air or Face ID like the iPad Pro, as Bloomberg’s report only states that “the removal of its home button has also been tested.”

Aside from the new iPad Mini, Apple is also planning to release a thinner version of the 10.2-inch iPad, mainly geared towards those who use an iPad for educational purposes. Both products are likely to be launched around the end of this year.
