Pokémon GO has just turned five this week, and folks at Niantic have launched a special event to celebrate its fifth anniversary.
It has already been five solid years since Pokémon GO was launched on the iPhone, which entailed people venturing out in the world with the main goal of catching Pokémon (pocket monsters) using augmented reality. Niantic, the developer of the game, is commemorating the milestone with many in-app events for the next ten days.
Starting from July 6 at 10 am to July 15 8pm local time, players shall have the chance to capture a Flying Pikachu with a 5-shaped balloon as well as Darumaka, as they will be appearing more frequently in the wild. In-game fireworks from last year’s Pokémon GO Fest will also be present in the map to celebrate the game’s fifth anniversary.
Niantic has outlined their complete in-game features and bonuses that players will definitely enjoy during the ten-day celebration in a blog article with this opening statement, “What an incredible five years they’ve been. Remember back in 2016 when Pokémon GO was just about exploring the world and catching Pokémon? While this is still the core of the game today, the world of Pokémon GO is now so much more than that! Here are some of our favorite features from each year.”
Players are reminded to be aware of their surroundings and to follow guidelines from local health authorities when playing Pokémon GO.
Pokémon GO has been given several major updates over the last five years, including Field Research, Raid Battles, an improved AR+ experience, and more.
A global gaming sensation, Pokémon GO has been downloaded more than 1 billion times and named “Best App of the Year” by TechCrunch and “Best Mobile Game” by the Game Developers Choice Awards.
