Choosy – A Smarter Default Browser … And Almost Snow Leopard Compatible

Choosy browser Snow LeopardWith the words by Choosy developer George Brocklehurst, let’s see what Choosy is all about:

Forget the default browser, Choosy opens links in the right browser. When you click on a link Choosy will do the right thing, whether that’s something simple (like using whatever browser is already running) or something complex (like prompting you to pick a browser, but only when you hold down the shift key and click on a link to google.com).

Sounds pretty neat – and so it is. It’s a $12 application so you may think it’s a bit steep for an application that pretty much just launches a browser. I brought it because I got 50% off as a “thank you” for being a beta tester. At $6, the app is well worth it, I’d say.

Unfortunately Choosy is not 64 bit compatible so System Preferences will have to be restarted each time you want to change things around in Choosy. I can live with that, especially since Choosy still works.

But what I don’t like, is the total silence from the developer behind Choosy – no information about 64bit Snow Leopard support at all. There’s even 49 votes on 64bit compatibility in his feedback forum and no news about Snow Leopard on the Choosy website or the blog of George Brocklehurst either. It’s a paid app, so at the very least he could update the website to tell people that we shouldn’t expect 64bit compatibility or when to expect it.

If you know anything about Choosy and 64bit compatibility for Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, please speak up 🙂

UPDATE – September 26th: The developer, George, wrote in the comments below that 64-bit Snow Leopard support is coming, that’s great news – thanks George!

  1. 64-bit Snow Leopard support is planned. I’m not sure when I’m going to get it out (Apple inconsiderately timed the Snow Leopard release to conincide with some pretty major changes in my web development work) but rest assured, it is coming.

    • Hi George – sorry I didn’t reply until now, your comment was stuck in spam queue, luckily I spotted it in between tons of viagra comments.

Sounds wonderful with the 64 bit Snow Leopard release, I’ll be sure to update my blog post with this new information so those finding it through search engines, will see what you have planned.

      Thanks for commenting!
