Money March 2010: Blog Summary & Income Report

Another month has passed and that means it’s time to do another round-up post with my income report for TechPatio.com. You may have noticed how I wrote “Money March” in the title to this post. Well, there’s a good reason for that: I focused a lot of my energy on making money this past month. Let’s see how it went:

Conclusion: March ’10

Well, I think the numbers explain it pretty well. I had quite a lot of visits and pageviews because I created some posts that people were searching for. Income was good too, a new record. I focused a lot on making money this past month and it shows that it’s possible to earn a few hundred dollars by doing so.

Ebuzzing is of course my biggest source of income. They require more than just the usual 200+ word posts from many other review sites, but they pay better too. Check them out, if you’re a blogger.

Again, TweetAdder has been an amazing help for me. I gained around 10,000 new followers on Twitter in March alone (as you can see on the graph to the right), thanks to TweetAdder. I’m now very close to 15,000 followers in total so when I tweet about a new post I’ve created, I get quite a good amount of traffic in return from Twitter.

You don’t have to be a celebrity or anything to be popular on Twitter. I started out with just 500 followers on Twitter and after a few months use of TweetAdder, I’m now up to around 15,000 followers. You can do it too, check out TweetAdder if you’re interested.

Also because of all my Twitter followers, I was able to make a total of around $27 on Twitter in March, using MyLikes, Sponsored Tweets and Ad.ly.

I also used March to test different sizes of in-post AdSense, but the total income still sucks. 468×60 in-post banners are what seems to work best for me, closely followed by 336×280 text blocks. 3326×280 as a banner was also good, but not as good as the other two.

SONY was also nice enough to let me borrow one of their $299 noise canceling headphones for a review, which you can read here: Sony MDR-NC300D Review.

    • Hi Chandan. I don’t know if they will accept a blogger blog, but you really need to move over to dedicated hosting, sooner rather than later 🙂

  4. I never heard about ebuzzing, but I will check it out. I hope you do not mind my “name”, but it happens to be the name of the web site that I use and the name of the service that I offer.

One thing I would pay attention to: Your bounce rate. With 79% it is way too high for a blog. There is an easy fix for that: Put a video in the sidebar.

    • Hi link building services. Well, to be honest, I would prefer people use “a name” rather than a service/site name. I’m sure there are other blogs out there that doesn’t mind if you use the name field to do some SEO back to your own site, but TechPatio.com is not one of them 🙂

I’m not sure how a video in the sidebar will make lesser people leave the site after one pageview…?

  5. Hi Klaus,

Thank you for accepting my comment.

No, a video in the sidebar will not make that fewer people leave after one page view. Well, maybe so, if the video looks really enticing.

But the main point: Some people will watch the video. That will increase the average time spend on the site. If a person leaves the site after a certain time, they are no longer considered a bounce.

It is only a bounce, if a person comes to your site, glances over it and hits back immediately where they came from.

Monitoring and reducing the bounce rate is actually a “secret” SEO weapon. Secret, because very few people believe it (they are too lazy to test it for them selves). Google measures relevance by counting how much time a visitor spends on a web site.

If the web site is “wrong”, meaning not relevant to the search query, the visitor will hit the back button within a few seconds (10 to 20 seconds). If the visitor spends an average of lets say 1.5 minutes on your site, just switching on the video and watching the first part, Google “knows” that the result that was shown was excellent.

Google will keep that in mind and will send you more visitors. Very simple, VERY effective. Try it out and you will see.

    • I agree with you link building but can you suggest other ways to decrease bounce rate. My awstat is showing around 80% bounce rate and at the same time, the average time is above 2 minutes, is there any correlation between the two?

    • Thanks Paul – but I don’t expect anything near it, for April. I’m probably expecting more like $50 or so, I just want hosting to be paid plus extra 🙂 I Won’t have time to monetize as much in April as I did in March.

    • Hi Atul. Thanks for your comment! I’m sorry to hear that your earnings are not the same as mine – but now you know that it’s possible, but it’s probably going to be very hard using only AdSense. Check out the programs I’m using, you can click on them in the earnings-table above.
