Happy Birthday, .Com domain. You’re now 25 years old.
On March 15th, 1985, Symbolics registered the first .com domain, Symbolics.com.
The 2nd domain name to be registered under .com, was bbn.com, which was registered April 24th – more than a month after Symbolics.com.
In 1985, only six domains were registered and 53 domains in 1986.
Today there are more than 90 million .com domains and 500,000 new domains are added every week (no information regarding how many domains are deleted/expired every week).
For more .com celebrations, check out the website created by Verizon (if you can, it seems overloaded), 25yearsof.com.
So it has been 25 years since the first website is made.

Not sure. It’s been 25 years since the first .com domain was registered 🙂
Oh wow I SURE WISH someone had sent me a birth announcement! I would have gone nuts buying .coms while there were lots of single-word short ones available!

Gosh, even .com is younger than me! It sure looks older though. lol.. Well, what can I complain, time flies. I would love if my parents would get me some .com as birthday presents 25 years ago. You know, some funny names like Yahoo, Google, Bing.. or Facebook? 😛

Klaus,
That is an interesting obversation, and it shows how quickly the Internet has escalated, and how ownership of it has become more dominant over the last decade.
Do you happen to know what those first .com websites were?
P.S-I am back from my trip, and back on your blog.
