Laptop or Desktop – Which one is the Best and Why Should Choose It

Over the years, the decision many people have been faced with is to make a choice between a desktop computer and a laptop computer. Many who are not ready to spend much would decide to go for a desktop computer. But on the long run they’ll have to settle for less, considering the fact that a laptop computer provides more ease of use and portability with many other noteworthy options that the desktop is otherwise limited to.

If you are tangled in a dilemma and don’t know which one to go for in both computers, I have in this article some reasons why a laptop computer might be the best for you.

Portability

One of the many reasons people do consider a laptop computer over a desktop computer is how easy it is to be carried about. You can’t change the position of a desktop computer without having to dismantle it. The option of portability you get from a laptop computer makes it not only convenient to use at any situation, but also makes it a choice for those on camping and touring.

So if you want a computer that could be moved about wherever you are going, or one that could be used when you are on holidays far away from your home – a laptop computer would be the best option for you.

But if on the other hand, you don’t even like carrying your computer with you, you can still fare well with a desktop computer.

Extra Power

Who doesn’t like a situation whereby you can still go ahead to use your computer for hours uninterrupted even when there is a brownout? It will not only save you from losing your work, but it will also save you from embarrassment. As you know, only a laptop computer has extra power backed up in its battery. Depending on how strong your laptop computer’s battery is, some can last for as long as eight hours at a stretch while some can do for just a couple of hours.

You can choose between a computer that will allow you to use it even when there is a brownout and work conveniently and with rest of mind, or go for a computer that can make you lose your unsaved data when power goes out unexpectedly, unless of course if you are using a UPS that comes at yet an additional fee.

Easy Handling

Finally, the other thing that attracts people to choosing a laptop computer over a desktop computer is the ease of handling the laptop gives them. If you’ve used a desktop computer before, you’ll agree with me that you are not always comfortable sitting in one position for like eternity and do wish you could move you computer from one place to the other, only to see that that can’t be done considering the cluttered cables and the heavy monitor screen attached to it.

If you don’t mind your back aching you while you’re fixed to one position working on your computer – then desktop computer might be the best option for you. But for the user that cares for ease of use and being able to go around exercising the body while still at work, a laptop computer should be your choice.

Now you know a few reasons you should go for a laptop computer? Any other tips from you will be appreciated.

  1. Dear Phillips

This is an interesting question and one I have debated with my friends. I have both which is very nice but I can see why someone would just pick a laptop if they had to choose, but personally I would pick a desktop, especially if I were short on money, as it seems to me that desktops break a lot less easy, seem to therefore last longer and tend to be more powerful for what you pay. 2. Laptop and Desktop, both have their own advantages and disadvantages. However the trend is now towards the laptop. World is going towards miniaturization, so apart from laptop, iPad and iPhone are also gaining popularity.

  3. I do have laptop but still prefer to have desktop at homes. In certain entertainment tasks like playing video games or watching movies, large LCD screen of desktop is better to have fun compare to laptop. On the other side, laptop is most require when you travel and meet people for business presentation.

  6. This is a pretty interesting article!

I’ve actually had pretty long debates about this with a few friends over a beer or two (that is when we’re not discussing the morally and intellectually controversial questions that plague the modern world. Yeah that’s right beer makes us talk smart!).

All jokes aside though, I personally prefer the good old desktop computers over their portable, more expensive, and mostly less capable counterparts. Sure you can take your laptop everywhere; but honestly, can it handle the same things a desktop within the same price range can? Moreover, laptops usually break a lot easier than desktops. Ironically, this might also be because they’re so portable. Getting exposed to so much dust, moisture, etc. doesn’t help preserve your gillion dollar investment on the laptop. And lastly, here’s the clincher. Desktops are much easier to upgrade and thus have a significantly longer lifespan, which in turn makes them even cheaper over time.

In the end though, I guess, being a desktop lover myself, I was just trying to defend desktops. It all still depends on your budget and priorities! So just choose whatever works for you!

  7. I use both. The disadvantage of a desktop is that it occupies much space. But I love working with it. I also love the convenience that a laptop offers.

  9. The debate between laptop and desktop use will be an ongoing debate for years. Each one has its own place, much as the tablet and smartphone do now, and they will continue to be around for years to come unless technology improves enough to develop laptops that can completely replace a desktop machine without the downfalls (i.e. heat, size, upgrade ability, etc)

This article does bring up some great comparison points, but really avoids the true first question that you should ask yourself before even making a comparison between the two. Which is, what do you NEED the computer for? Once you have answered that you should have a better idea of what will suite your needs best.

  10. When we say portability Laptop would fit that, when we say extra power that is Desktop and when we talk easy handling and that is a laptop. It is nice to have both, they are both worth and useful especially in blogging.

  15. Why not have both and a decent piece of a sync software? Then you have the power and portability together – and don’t have to fight your family when it comes to web browsking 😉
