Turning Your Resolution Into Reality With Fitness Apps

We use our smartphones for just about everything these days. We used to need cameras, but now our smartphones handle that. We used to need mp3 players, but our smartphones have us covered. Now that there are a host of great fitness apps, your smartphone might be able to take the place of your personal trainer. Here are a few of our favorite fitness apps just in time for the New Year’s Resolution you just made.

iMap My Ride is an app geared at cyclists. The app allows you to track your distance, time and, as a social feature, let’s you see the courses your friends like to ride. The app is also a sort of Facebook for cyclists as you can update your status and arrange rides or post-ride meet-ups with friends. The app is free, but fair warning—cycling might become your new favorite hobby.

Lose It is another free app that keeps track of your food consumption and exercise throughout the day. If you are a diligent about inputting your daily amounts of food and exercise into the app (no cheating!) this can be a very effective weight loss tool. Just set your daily calorie budget and choose the food you’re eating from Lose It’s vast database of brand name foods. The app will tell you how many calories you’re consuming and with the weight loss goals you can set, how much exercise you need to do to meet your goals.

The FitnessBuilder app is fully loaded with all the features that are important to the New Year’s Resolution crowd and the hardcore workout junkies. The $9.99 price tag might seem a bit expensive for the FitnessBuilder but it will be money well spent. There are a huge variety of exercise routines and progress trackers, which has the ability to input your location (gym, bedroom, etc) and have a routine created that fits into whatever location and situation in which you find yourself. Are you on the road and staying in a hotel room, away from your dumbbells? No problem. Just enter “hotel room” into the location bar and get started on a stripped down workout free of equipment.

These apps are the perfect addition to any fitness freak or casual exerciser’s smartphone. Now, if they could only make an app that makes broccoli taste like chocolate cake.

  1. Interesting article. I’ve seen an app before that tracks your route when you go for a jog so you don’t have to pay attention to where you’re running. Then when you are done, it will give you directions home!

  2. I use the mapmyrun app for the iphone, it is great as it allows you to use the GPS to plot the route you have been running and then share it across your social media sites so friends can see what and where you have been running. Great app and it has a free version 🙂

  3. This “Lose it” app sounds really attractive, and as far as I understood, it is free, right. Is it compatible with all smartphones?

  4. I also use the Lose it app, it is really nice. And I have to mention the Nike app, which is included originally on iPhones. It is really nice if you like to jog;)

  5. Thanks for the great list but in my opinion i think applications will never replace trainers. Real trainers can guide you through the correct way of doing the exercise real time. Unlike apps, they just provide information how to do it but never guide you how to do it.

  6. I think people who are looking for other ways of tracking or logging execercise are looking for loopholes around the fact that in reality, you need to get off your ass.

People who are fit don’t use apps.
