Apple gets First Ever Oscar Nominations for Wolfwalkers and Greyhound

Apple managed to earn its first ever Academy Award nominations for feature films since the Apple TV+ worldwide launch of Apple Original Films in 2020. Animated fantasy adventure film Wolfwalkers was nominated for Best Animated Feature, while the war film Greyhound, starred and written by Tom Hanks, was nominated for Best Sound.

Wolfwalkers is the most recent project directed by Ross Stewart and two-time Academy Award-nominated director Tomm Moore, and is an international co-production led by the award-winning animation studios Cartoon Saloon and Melusine Productions

From Wikipedia, Wolfwalkers centers on the story of a young apprentice hunter Robyn Goodfellowe, who travels to Ireland with her father to wipe out the last wolf pack. While exploring the forbidden lands outside the city walls, Robyn befriends a free-spirited girl, Mebh, a member of a mysterious tribe rumored to have the ability to turn into wolves by night. As they search for Mebh’s missing mother, Robyn uncovers a secret that draws her further into the enchanted world of the Wolfwalkers and risks turning into the very thing her father is tasked to destroy.

On the other hand, Greyhound is based on The Good Shepherd, a 1955 novel by CS Forester. Tom Hanks takes on the role of a US Navy Commander on his first war-time assignment as captain of a multi-national escort group.

Nominated in Best Animated Feature also are titles Onward, Over The Moon, A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon, and Soul.

Greyhound will then compete for the trophy versus Mank, News of the World, Soul, and Sound of Metal.

Apple has been honored with a total of 81 award wins and 329 nominations so far.

Apple’s head of Worldwide Video Zack Van Amburg said, “Nothing is more exciting than seeing these unique and meaningful films resonating with both critics and audiences globally. We are incredibly proud of what we’re building at Apple, and to have these films celebrated in this way — and in such a short space of time — we’re humbled and thankful for the artists and filmmakers who have partnered with us.”

Apple’s head of Worldwide Video Jamie Erlicht said, “We’re grateful for the Academy’s recognition of ‘Wolfwalkers’ and ‘Greyhound’. We want to congratulate the filmmakers and the cast and crew who brought these brilliant stories to the screen, and to everyone who has championed these films around the world. We are excited to continue sharing exceptional storytelling from the most creative visionaries in the year ahead and beyond.”

The 93rd Academy Awards is scheduled on Sunday, April 25, at the Union Station Los Angeles and the Dolby Theatre at the Hollywood & Highland Center.
