Netflix Smashes Audience Records with 203M Subscribers

Netflix, a well-known American Internet streaming media provider, has announced on Tuesday that it now has more than 203 million subscribers all over the world, after 8.5 million new customers have signed up between October and December 2020.

In Netflix’s quarterly letter to shareholders, the entertainment/media company’s annual revenue reached £18.3 billion, a 24% increase on the previous year.

The vast number of subscribers means that Netflix is by far the most popular online streaming platform in an ever-growing competitive market, with closest rival Disney+ reaching 86.8 million global subscribers in December.

Despite the crowded streaming market, Netflix acknowledged its other bigger competitors and said, “It’s a great time to be a consumer of entertainment. There are a wealth of options ranging from linear TV to video gaming to user generated content on YouTube and TikTok. We continue to work hard to grow our small share of screen time against these major competitors.

Netflix continued, “Our strategy is simple: if we can continue to improve Netflix every day to better delight our members, we can be their first choice for streaming entertainment. This past year is a testament to this approach. Disney+ had a massive first year (87 million paid subscribers!) and we recorded the biggest year of paid membership growth in our history.”

According to the streaming giant, The Crown’s recent fourth season was its most successful ever, and the drama series garnered more than 100 million views since it launched.

Netflix said that regency period saga Bridgerton proved to be “immensely popular” and it has “exciting news” to reveal about the show later this week.

Chess-themed limited series drama “The Queen’s Gambit” was streamed by 62 million homes, the biggest limited series debut so far in the streamer’s history. Netflix reported that its original series comprise 90% of the most-searched shows worldwide in 2020, with original movies representing another 20%.

The biggest film of their fourth quarter was sci-fi drama The Midnight Sky starred by George Clooney. About 72 million households have watched the movie in its first four weeks.

Netflix was founded in 1997. The California-based company initially sold and rented DVDs by mail. Its growth skyrocketed immensely from 2013 after it began to invest in its own content, debuting its first series House of Cards.
