Microsoft Opens The (Perhaps) Largest Data Center In The World

servers_rackLast month Apple announced they are looking to spend one billion U.S. dollars to build a gigantic 45,000 square meters data center in North Carolina, this week Microsoft invited selected reporters, customers and partners to see their new data center.

This new data center, which is located near Chicago, is 65,000 square meters with room for 56 containers, capable of holding 2,000 servers each. Currently they only have 12 containers installed but Microsoft expect to utilize the entire data center later on. The estimated price for all the hardware will be more than 500 million dollars.

So where exactly is this shiny new data center? First of all, it’s not shiny or fancy. It’s located in a regular warehouse in one of the many industrial areas of Chicago. Second, the exact location is confidential and there’s no signs pointing in it’s direction…

I guess all we will ever see to this new data center is via the online applications that we might run through it’s servers!

  1. Holy s***. That’s huge and 500 million U$ of valued hardware! Makes you think what the people at Richmond are up to. Will they join the wagon on “cloud computing”? Are they preparing for a massive attack on their competitors? Who knows, but I am convinced that they have something up their sleeve. Microsoft has been giving a lot of free stuff lately, and with this kind of investment, it makes one wonder..

    • I’m quite sure they’re not only jumping onto the cloud computing wagon but they’re looking to get a lead on it too 🙂

I’m not sooo much into Microsoft, I admit, but I think their next Office suite has some online stuff going on as well, so maybe this new data center is also supposed to be used with that?

    • Yep, it *is* huge… I wonder if we will ever know exactly what Apple will use their new data center for and what Microsoft will use their’s for. Or if it’s just general for whatever online services they might have.
