Since (almost) forever, Gmail has been showing from where (IP address) the last login at your mail account occurred. But very few people actually pay attention to it and most people are not aware of their own IP address and whether or not a login has occurred from a different IP.
Now, Google changed this feature in Gmail to actually warn you, should a login suddenly occur from an unknown IP address. It will also warn you if another computer is logged in to your e-mail account at the same time as you are.
An activity log will be able to provide you with further information, should you receive such a warning from Gmail, and you will be encouraged to change your password.
If you’re a person who travels a lot or often login from different IP addresses, you can easily disable this new feature.
It’ll be good to know, anyway! I do log in from several different computers and a couple of different isps, but I’d love to know if someone else logs in from somewhere else entirely. 🙂

I got my first warning after I checked email on my phone and forgot to logout. It is a good feature but I have to shut it off. I check email from home, work, phone and random cafes.

I think it’s really good to get these warnings. You don’t want someone coming in and taking all of your important information.

That’s great news you have there! Almost of my email accounts are under gmail and our company is utilizing it as our official email client.
This is very interesting. I actually never paid attention to it.
You mentioned that very few people know their own IP address. There is service that you can use to check your IP easily: myip.dk . I regularly use it, whenever I want to know my IP address. I am not from Denmark, that is what the .dk stands for, but somehow I have memorized that name.
