Official: 300,000 iPads Sold During First Day. I Want One!!

It’s official. Apple announced that they sold 300,000 iPads on opening day. The number includes pre-order pickups, deliveres to channel partners and walk-in sales at Apple Stores. With a starting price at $499 and 300,000 units sold, we’re looking at 150 million dollars spent on iPads…

The 300,000 new iPad owners went ahead and downloaded over 1 million apps from the App Store and more than 250,000 ebooks.

TUAW reports that for comparison, iPhone 3G and 3GS sold one million units in three days and the first iPhone sold one million units in 74 days.

Two months ago, I said that I wasn’t going to get an iPad just yet. Heck, I don’t care, the child in me says “GIVE ME!!!” – but I guess that’s partly because I can’t have one, since it’s not available over here yet. On the other side, if it was available, I would be writing this blog post from my iPad right now, while sitting in a comfortable chair, about to launch SimCity and continue building my city… Instead, I’m left here on my boring MacBook Pro, reading a story on 7 things that surprised Scott Kelby about the iPad.

  1. I think Apple should send you one to review! You have a lot of influence with us – I know I only took seconds to decide on a camcorder based on your recommendation! 🙂

    • Yes, I wouldn’t mind getting one for review. But I seriously don’t that’s ever gonna happen – unless I buy it myself 🙂

    • At least you know when to expect it – over here, we don’t have a clue when it will arrive 🙂

  3. I tested the iPad yesterday. My main thing is that I want to be able to edit PDF like I can on a regular PC or Mac. I am hearing that like the i Phone, it does not support the adobe flash. I left the store empty handed.

    • Yep, it doesn’t support flash. No big deal to me, to be honest. But to some people, it is. And if you need PDF edit support, an iPad is definitely not the way to go 🙂 A $250 netbook would probably be a much better choice.

  4. That number includes pre-ordered ones, wonder how much that number was. I think something like this can become a central device in the future, somewhere between a smartphone and the desktop.

    • Hi Jake. Yes, the number include pre-ordered iPads. I read somewhere that around 150,000 units were pre-ordered, but the number wasn’t confirmed by Apple.

  6. Lots ordered yes, but I’d like to see what the sales figures will be in Europe when it is released. I think this could be a flop for apple.

    • I don’t think Europe will be as good as the US since it will be more expensive over here. I’m quite sure I will buy one when I go to the US for the summer, but I might get one in Europe before, if the price is right. It would be great to have on an 8 hour plane ride, times two 🙂
