Tips for Sharing and Organizing Your Photos Online

Photo sharing and social networking sites are have become increasingly popular for organizing and sharing photos online. Usually, such sites offer free services with storage space of varying sizes. Some charge for extra premium services and for storage which exceeds the free quota.

Photo sharing sites are not just useful for organizing and sharing photos. They give people the opportunity to show off their work, connect with other photo enthusiasts worldwide, join groups of people with similar passion, find inspiration, as well as receive and give feedback. When looking for a site to join, explore several options and ask friends who have used the service for their opinion. Visit online forums and read what others are saying. Read their policies and find out which service suits you best.

There are several online services that you can use to store, organize, share, print or edit your images. This includes Flickr, Pixcetera, Shutterfly, Snapfish, Fotki, Pikeo and Photobucket. These sites are similar in very many ways. However, some offer more functionality in terms of editing capability, sharing possibilities and data storage. Photo sharing sites can generally be used as follows:

Storing and uploading images

The first step would be to install free or premium software on your PC or laptop. You will then need to follow the instructions provided to post or upload videos or photos from your phone or your computer. Different services offer varying amounts of free storage.

Editing possibilities

Most of the services offer applications for image editing which allow you to carry out basic enhancements such as cropping, adding creative effects and fonts, as well as removing red eye.

Organizing your photos

Create sets of images, collections or albums based on themes, events or destinations. You can include location information and keywords to help web users find the images through a search engine.

Sharing your photos

One of the most effective ways of sharing your photos is through a blog. Blogs which feature photographs are referred to as fotoblogs or fotologs, whereas blogs which feature video footage are known as vlogs or video logs. Photos or videos shot using a camera phone can be uploaded from virtually anywhere. This is referred to as moblogging or mobile blogging. Fotoblogs have proven very effective in promoting my mixbook discounts and snapfish coupons.

Creating a photoblog

Creating and setting up a photoblog is relatively easy. Photo sharing sites offer a wide range of tools, techniques and tips which can help you start a blog. To ensure your blog gets maximum coverage, you need to get it listed in directories like Posterous, Tumblr and Photoblog.

Creating a photo book

Many photographers dream of having their images featured in a book, with their name on the cover. There are several digital bookmarking services which allow you to create short-run or single editions of your own photo book. Such services are offered by companies such as Lulu, Asuka, Momento, Digital da Vinci and Blurb. You provide the text and images and the company provides tools, design templates and software.
