Xbox 360 is a bittersweet success for Microsoft. Although the machine is the second most selling and so far keeps up with the very hyped Playstation 3, the cost has been high. First there was the Red Ring Of Death (RROD) issue, when a hardware failure meant that virtually all of the Xbox’ had to be replaced. In light of this, Microsoft extended warranty to three years.
But the errors didn’t stop there. A software update in the spring meant multiple machines went bust, again.
Now the magazine Game Informer investigated how widespread the problem really is. They sent questionnaires to 5,000 readers, and the results doesn’t look too good for Microsoft. 54.2 percent of Xbox 360 consoles break. By comparison, only 10 percent Playstation 3 and Wii 6.8 percent breaks.
Xbox 360 owners are said to play somewhat more than owners of other consoles, though, but Microsoft customers are also more dissatisfied with the customer care and repair time of the Xbox.
Strangely enough, the problem does not make Xbox 360 owners switch to a Playstation 3 or Wii. Only 3.8 percent will never buy an Xbox 360 again, should it fail once more.
I have a Playstation 3 and Nintendo Wii and never had any problems with any of them – but then again, I rarely use them nowadays. The PS3 is just waiting for Uncharted 2 to be released….

PS3 just is superior in general, quality and functionality not to mention variety of games. WII is okay but even it can not really hold a candle to the graphics or blue ray double bonus. Microsoft needs to stay on software, not gaming !

I prefer PS3 too, but I can’t really blame Xbox users for their choice because they do have some great games available 🙂
I have all 3, and rarely use any of them because I far and away prefer the PC as my gaming platform of choice. Of the 3, though, I use XBox 360 the most, because the Wii is something I only pull out as something social when friends are over, and it is only recently that the PS3 started getting enough decent games to make it worthwhile. Sony really started out in a hole with the debacle that was the first year or so, and has been digging out ever since. I do use the PS3 as a Blu-ray player, though.
Wow thats a pretty staggering number, Im amazed that MS even offers it at this point.

I’d have to say I’m lucky in this respect. I’ve got an Xbox 360 and have not had any trouble out of it. (Although by typing this I may be jinxing myself! 😉 ) Granted I only play it a few times a week and not that long at that. But, I will say, my nephews have one as well and have been plagued with various troubles.. Intermittent DVD drive, network port etc…
The research we did on these before we got it should all those problems then but the number of games available and the online experience you get through Xbox Live make it worth a little trouble I think… maybe?

Wow. That’s an amazingly terrible statistic. I’ve known many friend who’ve had problems with thier Xbox 360’s, but I had no idea that over half of them break, hah. In light of that, and how (in my opinion) the Microsoft Xbox 360 games library just doesn’t stack up to PS3 (although much more complete and varied than Wii), I don’t see how anyone would buy a 360 nowadays. I think the choice is clear, get a Wii if you’re looking for a party-type atmosphere, and get a PS3 if you’re looking for serious gaming. Anyone disagree?

Only half? I’ve got 3 in my house. 1 was repaired and then something else broke which they wouldn’t fix (it works, kinda). 1 was repaired (lightening strike). 1 hasn’t broke yet (had it less than a year) cheap arcade that we used while number 2 was being repaired.

I’ve gotta say PS3 by far… Just because they always seem to have the biggest game selection.
they have a new one out that doesn’t break and to this day only 4 have ever had issues, you have to make sure you get the right one though and its the same price so it can be tricky.
