Most of us only get only a few weeks off from work, and when we want to make them worth our while, we can sometimes feel as though we are rushing through it. Although everyone likes to experience their vacation in their own way, finding that balance of seeing new things and getting some time to relax can always seem like a struggle.
Here are 5 ways you can make the most of your time away from your desk and enjoy yourself.
1. Do a little advanced planning
One thing you will want to do before you even set out on your journey is take a look at the things you think you want to see and what you feel like you can miss. If you plan to do some relaxing, then setting aside days where you can sit by the pool or read your book will be necessary. It’s all about finding that balance of knowing how much time you want to spend running around and how much time you want to spend enjoying time away from the office.
2. Figure out how you’re going to get there
Finding out how you are going to reach your destination can be half the battle of the success of your trip. Whether you choose to rent a RV or you want to fly, thinking about how each mode of transportation fits into your planned days and which would be the most efficient can end up being a major issue if you choose to do the wrong thing. Decide if you want to take a road trip or you plan on flying, you’ll want to make the decision fairly far in advance.
3. Decide on your budget
Knowing your budget before you go can end up not only saving you money, but also can end up saving you a lot of stress. Budgeting is often one of the hardest parts of putting together a journey, but it can ease your mind when you are aware that you are only going to spend a certain amount while on vacation. Not all of us have a paid vacation, so we need to take into account how much money we are spending while we are away.
4. Choose a location that’s not too busy
While there are number of places you can go that are popular with tourists during certain seasons, you’re most likely going to want to choose ones that aren’t that busy. Shoulder seasons allow you to save money and end up enjoying a location more because there aren’t a number of people around. When in doubt, you can always contact a travel agent and see which seasons are the least likely to be crowded.
5. Disconnect
SIM cards have made it possible to go anywhere in the world and feel connect with back home. However, this can actually end up causing you to spend more time on the phone than enjoying where you are! Make sure you take some time to put away your cell phone or computer and to forget about work emails. It’s not easy, but it can lead to you having a more enjoyable vacation overall.
Taking a vacation is a rare moment when you get a break from work. It’s up to you to make the most of it and come back feeling refreshed and ready to head back to the office again.

Vacations are great but stay-cations are underrated. When you want to relax, sometimes travelling can be stressful. Staying home, sorting things out, doing some life admin can be just what you need to re-charge 🙂
I find the best way to enjoy my time off is to immerse myself in home DIY projects. I’m not talking about “chores” but stuff I really enjoy doing. Framing, re-furbishing old furniture, rainwater harvesting, that sort of thing. I built a shed last year using and it really helped me relax and NOT think about work when I wasn’t there.
