Photos store precious memories. With the development of technology, people have fewer physical photos but resort to save the images on computers. On one hand, the images become easier to keep and are no longer confined to a storage environment; on the other hand, however, it could be devastating when you delete them by accident. The question is, how to retrieve deleted photos? Hope this post can help you out.
Ways to recover deleted photos from Windows PC
Fix 1: Restore deleted photos from Recycle Bin
If you press the Delete key or right-click to choose Delete the file or folder, the file will be removed to the Recycle Bin on the desktop automatically. In this case, recovering your deleted photos won’t be a problem. Just follow the steps:
- Open the Recycle Bin by double-clicking its desktop icon.
- Right-click the deleted photo or file you want and select Restore option.
Simple and easy, right? However, under some circumstances, you can’t find the files in the Recycle Bin:
- You have emptied the deleted photos from Recycle Bin.
- You clear the files by using the Shift + Delete key shortcut.
- For external storage devices, the deleted photos from SD cards or hard drives won’t go to Recycle Bin for restoration as well.
If you can’t recover the data from Recycle Bin, perhaps you can try the next method.
Fix 2: Recover permanently deleted photos from Windows backups
- Recover deleted photos through File History
File History is a backup tool available in Windows 8.1 and later, the good news is if you have backed up the data before deletion, possibly, you can get deleted photos back following the instructions:
Step 1: In the search box on the taskbar, enter “Restore files”, and then select Restore your files with File History.
Step 2: Look for the file you need, then use the arrows to see all of its versions.
Step 3: When you find the version you want, select Restore to save it to its original location. To save it in a different place, press and hold (or right-click) Restore, select Restore to, and then choose a new location.
- Recover deleted photos from Previous Versions
Restore previous versions in Windows works as shadow copies of files and folders as a part of restore points. If you have backups, there you go:
Step 1: Open the File Explorer and find the file containing deleted photos.
Step 2: Right-click on the folder and select Restore previous versions in the context menu.
Step 3: Now you can view the list of available versions. Choose the version you would like to restore and click Restore.
Ways to recover deleted photos from Mac
When you delete one file from Mac, you can’t find the Delete option as the one you see on Windows. Your photos will be deleted by “Move to Trash” option. If you want to make them disappear forever, you can then empty the trash. Therefore, if you don’t empty the trash, you can try the first fix.
Fix 1: Recover deleted photos from Mac Trash or Bin
Step 1: Open the Trash on the dock.
Step 2: View a list of files that you have deleted recently.
Step 3: Right-click the photo you want to restore and choose Put Back to its original location.
Likewise, there are situations you can’t find your photos in Trash:
- The deleted images have been emptied from Trash.
- The photos have been removed from Trash after you click Delete immediately.
- You press Option + Command + Delete key shortcuts to delete the photos or videos.
Fix 2: Use Time Machine to recover deleted photos
Time Machine is Apple’s built-in backup tool designed to automatically back up all of your files, including apps, music, and photos. Try the following method to recover your deleted photos if you have a Time Machine copy.
Step 1: Click Apple icon. Select System Preferences… and then click on Time Machine.
Step 2: Check Show Time Machine in menu bar.
Step 3: Connect your Time Machine backup drive with the Mac computer.
Step 4: Open the folder where you stored your deleted images.
Step 5: Click the Time Machine icon in the top right menu bar and select Enter Time Machine.
Step 6: You’ll see all the backups of this folder and you can click up and down arrow to find the file you want to restore. You can also use the timeline on the edge of the screen to locate.
Step 7: Select the file and click Restore.
