SEO Was Yesterday – Now Comes NFO (Facebook)

Facebook logoSEO, Search Engine Optmization, is what bloggers (and companies) do, to get as high a rank in the search engines as possible. Something you should always aim to do if you’re interested in search engine traffic finding their way to your site.

Now there’s a new concept on its way: News Feed Optimization (NFO).

Recent Facebook changes mean that the default news feed presented to users is based on an algorithm designed by Facebook. Basically, the more “interesting” the news, the bigger chances for it ending up in your News Feed, based on comments, “like” etc.

If you, as a blogger or company, doesn’t optimize your news feed publications, you could very well end up not being visible in many news feeds at all. Users would then have to find your update in their Live Feed instead.

In the long run, News Feed Optimization is not only good for companies but also for Facebook users as they will experience the companies as relevant instead of spamming, now that Facebook automatically sort out irrelevant updates and news.

facebook_status_updates_newsfeedTip: Should you prefer to see Status Updates as default when logging in, then click the “More” link at the bottom of the left column. Now icons will appear to the right of your lists (still in the left column). Use the icon next to “Status Updates” to drag “Status Updates” to the top of your list, replacing the “News Feed” item. Now you will see Status Updates per default, next time you login.

  3. That’s sweet…

That would help a lot of facebookers get there interesting news read more often. I can really see how people who can harness this could benefit a lot from doing a little NFO.

    Could this be abused though?

    • Blaine, I haven’t looked so much into NFO yet myself, so I don’t know the technical details about it. However, I’m sure it can be abused one way or the other – the simple way would probably be to pay facebook users to “like” your stuff in order to bring it to the top.

  15. Hi Klaus,

Thanks for explaining this difference on Facebook; I didn’t understand why they’d changed.

Having said that, I still have no real idea how to optimize for it. I mean, do we write something poignant on our Facebook wall? Do we all create fan pages for our businesses? How do we make sure our blog posts show up in other people’s news feeds? That part I still don’t get.

  16. This is a very interesting read. We just started promoting through Facebook, so this will be a nice tool to add for bringing in traffic. We have not seen much traffic drive from FB as of yet, so hopefully this will give it a little kick start. Thanks for the post.

    Cheers
