Facebook: Even bigger photos for even better viewing

Facebook last increased photo sizes from 604 pixels to 720 pixels back in March 2010. Despite being a 20% increase, 720 pixels photos are not just that big here in 2010.

Apparently, Facebook agrees.

Facebook is now increasing sizes even more, from the 720 pixels to 2048 pixels. Much better – good job, Facebook!

They’re also changing the way photos are being displayed as you’ll see the big photo in the middle of the page and with black around it. 2048 pixels should even be enough for you to be able to print the photos in a reasonable size.

  1. I did notice the difference. Well, it’s about time. Pictures speak louder than words. Bigger pictures should speak even louder this time, wouldn’t it? 🙂

  2. Good move from FB, indeed !
I only wish they would also also the preview pics from Flickr links to be bigger, also…

  3. To me, it completely makes sense for a site that leans heavily towards media to make the media bigger and better. Sure, it’s a little more space on their servers, but what’s a little space compared to the end result of happier users?

  4. Thanks for the heads up. I didn’t realize Facebook had increased their picture sizes. I’m pretty excited about the change. Thanks

  5. Its all great that FB has increased the size of images being uploaded.. but doesnt that mean that it’ll take longer to upload? or does it compress them like picasa or Flickr?
