Mozilla Raindrop – An Alternative To Google Wave?

mozilla_labs_raindrop_logoGoogle Wave has been getting a lot of buzz in the world of tech lately, as more and more people are getting invitations and access to join Google Wave and try out the preview version.

Mozilla, the team behind applications such as Firefox and Thunderbird, now introduced their “alternative” to Google Wave. It’s called Raindrop. I’m putting “alternative” in double quotes as Raindrop is not really a Wave alternative per se, but more a way of collecting all your inboxes in a single place. It has some parallels to Google Wave though, and I guess it’s up to people’s preferences to decide which one they want to put their effort into using. Or both.

Raindrop accumulates your messages from several sources such as Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, YouTube, E-mail, etc. etc. Plus it also makes sure messages from friends and family are getting higher priority than mailing lists and advertisements. Raindrop also allows opening of YouTube videos directly within the application, so you don’t have to open a new browser window/tab.

Raindrop is of course open source, so expect to see tons of plugins.

    • Yes I’ve tried Google Wave a little bit… I don’t really see much use for it yet, but maybe when it’s “final”. The preview is buggy and quite limited.

  6. Thanks for the info, had never heard of this new app coming out. I have heard a lot of people are disappointed by the Google app so it’ll be interesting to see what Mozilla does. Their web browser is awesome and has tones of plug-ins so I’m hoping Raindrop will have the same benefits.
